Greatest Social Media Blunders

That is a shady character.

It could be a second hand car salesmen, a snake oil trader or one of those thousands of so-called Social Media experts with  their eyes on your money if not anything else.

Many people think they can save a lot of money on SMO by hiring a bunch of interns with laptops and get their community managed for peanuts, but they do not know that such techniques can backfire and get their brands banned on Twitter, Facebook and Google+ for life!

We will always advise you to get professional help with Social media optimization, because there is much more than clicking 'Like' and posting updates. If you truly want to leverage Facebook's true powers, you should look beyond interns and Fiverr guys!

Community Management Tips for Misers!

Being miserly is good, particularly when you own a Small Business and your expenses are bending your back! But your small size should not stop you from managing your community of existing and potential customers.

Most small and medium sized businesses hire cheap help to do this, which can pay off handsomely if handled correctly, but often it becomes a case of trial & error for small business. They do not know much about online communities and take every word of 'experts' for the gospel.

Here is a list of common mistakes that Fiverr people and college students masquerading as Social Media Experts make very often. You, as a small business owner, can use these points as interview questions to filter through crap and find one who knows what he or she is doing.

  1. Following/Unfollowing People On Twitter Like Crazy
It is better than not having a Twitter account at all, but not very helpful because if you go over the board and start following users very aggressively, Twitter will think you to be a bot! There is a common pattern among all bots and that is following many people on Twitter at once. Similarly, if you drop many people off your 'following' list all at once, you are inviting Twitter to take some action.

      2. Posting Low Quality Content Repeatedly

This is the most common reason that accounts get blocked on Twitter, but many brands and online entities do it anyway. It is how they expect to gain visibility. So, what is the secret? How many is too many? There is no exact figure on this, but we are pretty sure you will not attract attention if you tweet the same thing after long intervals with some variation to the text.

Having said that, if you ask a college kid to do community management, he might have many other clients to handle besides you. Therefore, it can be expected that he will post Low Quality Content more than Twitter's limit of tolerance. If that happens, you will be penalized.

     3. Hosting a Contest

Everybody is doing it, so you can do it too, right? You might, but we definitely advise against it. Hosting contests on Facebook or Google+ is not allowed. You are however allowed to post links to your internal contest page on your business website.

If you want to host contests and competitions or sell coupons, do it on your website and link to it on the Facebook page using an application or posting a graphical update on the page. Users can come to the Facebook app, like it and follow the link into your website, nothing more than that.

      4. Masquerading or Stealing Content

You might think this too cheap a technique to get traffic, but if you want everything for cheap you deserve such things, sorry!

Some people love celebrities, others love copying them for the clicks. No matter what you post on a fake celebrity account on Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest, you will get clicks. Curious community members will want to see whats at the other end of the link and get you some traffic. But imagine the damage when they will report a fake account!

The same thing is true about scraped and copied content. Most platforms will detect it and blow hot air up your social butt!

     5. Ignoring Your Community Presence For More Than 9 Months

Google will forget you if you forget your Google+ account for more than 9 months at a stretch. This is common with cheap hires because these social media paragons run off to college or find themselves a better job in a year or two and you are left with a rotting social page! That is perfectly fine if you can find another affordable guy as soon as the first one leaves, but that has its hurdles.

Me thinks, it is better to find a stable Social Media Optimization company that can give you gradual and consistent results instead of penalties and shockers!
