Using Social Media To Find a Good Job

Everything you do on the internet adds small but significant bits to your online identity or what some call, Online Reputation. The term 'online reputation' and 'online reputation management' are two of the most common words used these days in communities on the internet, particularly among those seeking a new job.

In our previous posts on the matter, we have talked in good lengths about the significance of a person's online reputation and how that can affect the way the person goes about his daily activities professional endeavors. If you take a moment to read the piece here, you will understand how online reputation management services can help you find a job online.

We discussed how recruiters used Social Media Channels and platforms to find details about job candidates, but these channels are very versatile and can be used the other way round. Social media channels can be used to find jobs, just the way recruiters can find the right candidate.

Lets just see how that is done.

Finding the Right Job on Social Media

Social media platforms are basically the same except for a few differences. For instance, Facebook and Linked In are both social media platforms, but both are vastly different in the way they help people connect. Facebook is much more informal and will allow almost anybody to make connections and send friend requests, Linked In on the other hand have a different approach to the whole process of making new connections.

Linked In is also better tuned to helping people make formal, professional connections. It is necessary to write a good introduction if  you wish to connect with someone on Linked In. Whereas with Facebook, all you need to do is send a friend request and you are done. Linked In profiles are made to be found publicly, whereas you might want to lock down visibility to your Facebook account to prevent strangers from finding out private things about you.

There are some big and a few subtle difference in all channels, so how do you use them all to find your dream job?

Counter Reconnaissance

Take the war on recruiters!

You can and should manipulate any information you get of your recruiter online. Do not worry much about what is ethical and what is not. This is war and just as they say, everything is fair here!

Check out Facebook, Linked In, Twitter and all online portals where you may find a trace of your employer. Though it will take more than mere mortal skills to understand the recruiter just by studying his social presence, nevertheless you should give it a try. You will be amazed by what you discover about the person.

Similarly, check his friend circle and see what company he keeps. This will give you a preliminary and very basic idea about the person.

Beginning GroundWork

Digging in The Right Places!

Digging in the right places can unearth mines of information. Just make a simple search for the name (of your recruiter) with quotes and you will have all the information you need to take your strategy in the right direction.

A smart recruiter will not divulge too much about him anyway, but the internet is an immense place and if you keep looking, you will find something that will help you.
But, do not under any circumstances, make a friend request to the recruiter. This is unethical and a sure shot way of eliminating any chance of your selection!

You can however, send him a link to your online resume or portfolio, but be sure not to pester them repeatedly.

Good Ole' Flattery

Nothing works better than simple flattery. Imagine the odds of you finding your recruiter in a heated debate on some social forum (blog or forum). You can get into his good books by singing along with him, regardless of what your opinions of the matter are.

Address the recruiter directly and say that you agree with him. Put in a few points of your own and if possible fry that guy raising his voice against your dear recruiter!

On the day of the interview, pick your moment and raise the topic. Say that you recognize the name (of your recruiter), exclaim: 'what a coincidence' and then wait for a response. Unless you have a rude douche bag of an  interviewer, you will get a favorable response!

Everything remains the same as it was, just the tools have changed over the years. We hope, using these three steps you will get at least a step closer to your dream job.
