Making a custom music Ringtone is a modest but important characteristic. Apple made a lot of changes to Itunes which were cosmetic, but some of them included features like ringtone creation. Many people are so obsessed with one specific song, and they love to play it again and again. So they choose to set it as a ringtone for their smartphones. 

A variety of tones are loaded in advance in the iPhones, but users generally want to set up their own custom ringtones. Apple doesn’t have an easy way to create custom ringtones, it is tough but not impossible. So we have a technique for the making custom ringtones using iTunes for the crazy ones, who love the specific song and want the same as their ring tone.

Points to know before making custom ringtones using iTunes

  • Music should in your iTunes library.
  • Tune shouldn’t be longer than 30 seconds (it’s 40 but having it at 30 makes it safer)
  • Check that a piece of music was purchased by right clicking the top sort bar and checking the Kind option.
  • It will show as “protected” or “purchased” if they were purchased via iTunes.
  • Change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r, so it’s recognized as a ringtone by iTunes.
  • Create an AAC version of the tone that you want as a custom ringtone.

These are step-by-step instructions for the iPhone users to make custom ringtones using iTunes software for free.

1. Launch iTunes and pick the song you want.

The first step is to choose the song from iTunes library to make a ringtone. Open iTunes on your Mac or PC and click on the My Music tab. Go to “Edit” > “Preferences” > “Import Settings” and ensure that “Import Using” setting is set to “AAC Encoder.” From the music library select a song of your choice and right click on it to use it as a ringtone, then click on "Get Info."

2. Set the part you want to use as your Ringtone.

When you click on "Get Info" go to the "Option" tab, in the main panel you’ll see settings for 'Start time' at what point you want to launch the song and ‘Stop time’ for to end the song. Enter the desired start and stop time for the ringtone, and it doesn’t exceed 30 seconds. Use these settings to isolate the part of the song you want, and then Click ‘Ok’ button to apply the setting when finished.

3. Make a Duplicate file

When the sound file is imported, and it is highlighted in iTunes. If you are using a Windows computer right, click the “File” > “Create AAC Version,” if you are using a Mac, click “Create Apple Lossless Audio File.” It will create a duplicate file AAC format, now you got a .m4a version of the song which is necessary to create the custom ringtone file. A cropped copy according to the length you set is set up in iTunes. Drag and drop this file to your desktop. That’s the one you can use for your new ringtone.

Don’t forget to go back and untick the Start and Stop options of the original soundtrack, else the track will only play the short section.

If you have not deleted anything on the actual track, don’t worry about losing the original song.

4. Open the song in File folder 

When the file is finished converting, an alert tone will let you know about the completion. Select that new 30-second song file you created, and right click on the new AAC version of that sound file. Now click ‘Show in Windows Explorer’ if you are using a Windows computer and if you are a Mac user, click on ‘Show in Finder.'

5. Rename the Extension of the file 

A window contains your newly created file with .m4a extension. It is most important to rename the extension name to .m4r. If you don’t change, then it’s not going to play as a ringtone on your iPhone.

(Note: if prompted to accept then make sure that your selection must be .m4r if it’s not visible then change the extension. (Tools > Options in the Windows lets you enable the extension view). 

6. Delete the duplicated file you made. 

After you have renamed the extension to .m4r, return back to iTunes and right click the song you've done from the iTunes library. Delete that short version of the track, check the length carefully before you press delete. It will ask you to move the selected song track to the Recycle Bin or keep it safe in the iTunes Media folder, make sure you choose “Keep File” otherwise the file will be deleted not only from our music library but from our computer entirely.

7. Import the track into iTunes tone library as a Ringtone

Go to the Windows Explorer, if you are using Mac then go back to the Finder window where the ringtone was saved and double click the shorter file. On clicking this file, it will start playing in the background. In the iTunes go to the row of icons in the top left corner and click on the three dots, from the given options select the tones. This time the song will automatically transfer to the iTunes Tone library as a ringtone.

8. Sync the ringtone with your iPhone 

After completion of creating a custom ringtone, you’ll need to sync it to your iPhone. Connect you iPhone to your computer. Now you are on the iTunes panel of your phone, in which you need to select the icon for your device, choose the “Tones” option from the “On My Device” section. To sync iTunes with your iPhone, click on “Sync All Tones” and wait till finish syncing. Ensure that the tone is sync, from the “Tones” option in the “settings” section.

9. Set the new Ringtone on your iPhone

On completion of syncing, next step is to actually set your custom ringtone. The song is now available to select as an iPhone ringtone. Go to “Settings” select “Sounds” and swipe down till the area below the vibrate option. You are able to put the particular tone for specific options like Text Tone, Voicemail, Tweet, Calendar Alerts, and Reminder Alerts, even you can assign to specific contact, etc. tap on it and set your ringtone.

Once all the above procedure is complete, right click on the originally used song select the “Options” tab, choose “Get Info” and set the interval back to the normal.
