With funding from government Broadband initiative programs, West Carolina Rural Telephone Cooperative (WCTEL) is quietly providing gigabit broadband services to residents in Columbia County through the Columbia County Community Broadband Utility. Nearly 300 residents have signed up for WCFIBER, which provides speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps. The rural cooperative has been able to make use of the county-owned fiber optic network to bring broadband Internet services to the underserved area.
