Improve your winter safety for your SUV

Finding ways to improve your safety should always be something that we strive towards. You want to make sure that you are ready for the Winter. The reason why cars are out of control and keep sliding when a snowstorm arrives is because they don’t have the correct tires. Regardless of what vehicle you have, a truck or an SUV or a normal passenger car, you will need to have special tires for winter conditions. A set of tires made for summer are dangerous to drive with when you have winter conditions. They are not made for handling these conditions, as they will get hard at low temperatures and not have a tread pattern that can handle snow and ice. The fact that you might drive with these tires despite this, makes it extremely dangerous.

For winter conditions you will need to have specific tires that have been designed for winter use. You need the correct rubber compound that will keep the rubber soft and agile even at low temperatures. All-season tires will become hard and will lose their ability to create the traction at low winter temperatures, which make them a bad choice for winter use. There is also the problem that the all-season tires don't have a tread pattern that have been designed for this purpose.

A proper SUV winter tire will have studs protruding from the tread, to ensure that you have good traction, especially on ice. Or it may have non-studded technology that allows the tire to still be extremely effective on winter roads. The tread design is also made so that you can easily drive on snow and the groove depth allows the tire to push away slush to ensure constant contact with the road surface. If you lose contact with the surface when there is slush, you will have the same problem as you have when there is water and your vehicle experiences hydroplaning. With slush your vehicle will experience slushplaning, where your tires will lose contact with the surface and you lose control over your vehicle. SUV studded tires are the best tires you can have when you want the best possible grip when you drive on ice.

You can also choose a SUV non-studded tire, which will most likely rely on crystal like grip particles added to the tread to create traction on ice and will have unique tread design to create great traction on snow and slush.

Your last option if you tend to drive in areas that have more sporadic winters, is to use a winter approved all-weather tire, to keep you safe regardless of weather. They can handle both winter and summer conditions and can be used all year round. With dedicated winter tires, you should not be driving with them in summer conditions, in the same way that the all-season tires are not good for winter temperatures, the winter tire will not perform well in summer. The rubber in the winter tire will become way too soft and will wear out prematurely.
