Rumors that Qualcomm was working on a new series of smartwatch processors were true. The rumored SD Wear 5100 has been officially presented under another name and in two versions. The new Snapdragon W5 and W5+ Gen 1 take the energy efficiency of wearables to another level

The Snapdragon Wear 4100 and 4100+ have already received their successors. These are the new SD W5 and W5+ Gen 1, two processors made with 4 nanometer technology that take performance and energy efficiency to another level.

These chipsets specially designed for smartwatches and wearable devices come with significant improvements over previous versions. In fact, the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 offers 50% more battery life and takes up 30% less space compared to the SD Wear 4100+.

Regarding its technical specifications, these new processors come with four Cortex A53 cores and a Cortex M55 efficiency core at 250 MHz in the improved version . In addition, they bring the A702 graphics at 1 GHz that triples the GPU of the SD Wear 4100+ (A504 of 320 MHz). They are also compatible with the LPDDR4 format of RAM memory capable of offering speeds of 2133 Mhz.

The difference between the Snapdragon W5 and the W5+ Gen 1 is that the Plus version comes with an AON (Always On) coprocessor . This add – on chip handles background tasks while consuming less power . These tasks range from voice processing, audio playback, notification management, to supporting network features such as Bluetooth 5.3 low power, WiFi, and GNSS.

What will be the first smartwatch to mount the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1?

Along with the announcement of these new processors, Qualcomm has also revealed that it has partnered with Compal and Pegatron (Asian companies responsible for manufacturing the electronic devices of the most popular brands on the market) for the design of smartwatches that have their new chipset under the hood.

Now, the first brands to launch a smartwatch that has the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 are expected to be OPPO or Mobvoi. In fact, it is very possible that the OPPO Watch 3 is the first smartwatch to hit the market with the new Qualcomm . We will have to wait to see if the Chinese manufacturer will have this honor or if Mobvoi will get ahead of it with the TicWatch Pro 4.
