Multiple laptops the norm now for remote users

With many companies working from home it is the norm for people to have Multiple Laptops. My how far we have come!

I worked in a job in the past where I was told by my IT manager that the company doesn’t give laptops to its IT staff. Only the executives had them. He said laptops were considered a “luxury”. Ok, when there was a problem I couldn’t fix it at home and my boss told me to wait until Monday.

Now I work for companies which give executives multiple devices like a laptop, ipad and sometimes even pay for a smartphone. Working in IT I have a main laptop, and also a test laptop that I used to test and perfect things like user onboarding and zero touch enrollment. Right now on my desk I have 4 laptops. Two of them supplied by the company and two of them are my personal laptops.

Why do I have two personal laptops? I have a generous friend who bought them for me. One of them is a mac which helps me test and learn things like watch training videos. I don’t use a TV because I don’t find it to be easy to watch training videos on. It isn’t very clear to read menus for example. The PC helps me to learn PC things since I work in IT. I have use both of them in addition to my two office laptops to do my job.

For example, by having Multiple Laptops I am able to have dedicated resources for things like email and application testing as I mentioned before. It also helps me to understand if there are networking issues. For example the PC has the worst time staying connected to my home wifi network. It might disconnect every day or so. The other macs have no issues disconnecting. So I can clearly state that the PC is at fault. If I have a problem with a loss of internet connection on my macs and not my pc, then I know the mac is at fault. I use this fact every moment while I am doing my job.

With multiple laptops I can switch to the one which best has the resources to do the task I need. Earlier last week when both of my work computers were broken, I was able to use my personal computer to test the work computers to figure out the problem. I sent them into apple and Apple fixed them. If you only have one computer, you have no backup. Two is better, but 3 is fantastic. It is very unlikely that two computers will have problems at the same time.

To be honest I feel and am spoiled by having 4 computers. Still it makes my job as an IT person easier, and I am more efficient because I have these resources. Multiple laptops are the present and future of home based work.
