Activating iTunes Genius playlist

For a long time, I have been wondering what Genius is in iTunes. After a registration process with a credit card (of course to create the iTunes account you need to have one), I managed to make the Genius playlist in my iTunes work. By the way, I just signed up for iTunes during the activation process, I did not buy anything. You need to have an iTunes account to make this thing work.

So what is Genius and is it really for you? Genius is some sort of an automatic playlist generator based on a Song. When you have a song playing in an iPod/iPhone, tap the screen once and you should see the lyrics of the song (if there is any that is. At the top center of the screen you will see a Genius icon. When you have that function activated, it will bring you to the Genius playlist based on that song where you tapped the icon. Now one thing is very unique with this function, it seems that it manages to bring your favorite songs (probably based on the number of times you played the song or comparing the song with other genius users and creating a playlist out of the top songs or simply by creating a playlist based on the same genre, or a combination of it all– I don’t really know, just guessing). This is a very nice feature if you have a vast collection of songs from different genres. I have written here a short guide on how to activate and use iTune’s Genius player.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Open iTunes and create an iTunes Store account. You will need a Credit Card when you create an account.
  2. Once done with the account, you can go ahead and click Genius in you playlist in iTunes. Activate the genius player. For the first time it has activated, it will information from your library, if you have a large collection of songs, you need to stay back, this might take quite a while. I have mine done overnight, probably because I have large song collection located outside my network accessible to some sort of network drive mapping.
  3. Once you are done, sync your iPod/iPhone.
  4. Now play your favorite song, and then tap the screen ounce. At the top center of your screen, you will see the Genius icon, tap.
  5. You will now have the playlist of the songs related to the song that you have tapped or chosen the Genius icon.

So, that’s how easy it is to activate and use the Genius playlist. I hope it worked for you. Have fun!
