Are Robot Vacuum Cleaners Worth It? What To Know Before You Grab One This Prime Day

Robot vacuum cleaner by Roomba in room with wood floors

Ever wondered are robot vacuum cleaners worth it? Us too. After all, with so many new gadgets being invented it can be tricky to know if the hype is real or just, well, hype.

With the debate around robots, artificial intelligence, and smart technology heating up, homeowners are asking themselves the same question: should we incorporate these smarter appliances into our homes? The best robot vacuum cleaners have been a popular choice for those with less time on their hands for years, and there's no doubt that these hands-free heroes have upped their technology game in recent years.

Yes, robot vacuum cleaners are now smarter than ever and offer extra gadgets and gizmos that could suit any kind of floor in any kind of household. But while smart robot cleaners might suit some people, they might not quite cut the mustard with others. And with Amazon Prime Day offering some major bargains, are robot vacuum cleaners really worth it?

The pros of robot vacuum cleaners

A robot vacuum cleaner could improve your cleaning efforts, and here are just a few reasons how it could help.

    They're easy to use

Experts have set the record straight on how often you should be vacuuming high-traffic areas in your home. Thankfully, robot vacuum cleaners have made this easier than ever.

'For those at work these vacuum cleaners can be set with a timer to start hoovering at a certain point during the day,' says home expert Anna Elkington from Melody Maison.

'Or alternatively if you're busy cooking tea or cleaning other areas of the house a robot vacuum can hoover at the same time to complete two tasks at once.'

    They can be stored anywhere

'Often one of the main selling points when it comes to vacuum cleaners is their ability to take up minimum space, as often many homes are limited with storage space,' says Anna.

'Robot vacuum cleaners can be stored virtually anywhere, their compact nature makes them ideal for being easily tucked away.' But even if you don't spare cupboard space to store it, their often sleek and sophisticated designs stop it from being an eyesore.

The cons of robot vacuum cleaners

Although robot vacuum cleaners are handy, it's important to remember that there are some drawbacks you might want to consider.

robot vacuum on a floor beside a dog

    They're not as hygienic

'Robot vacuums may not be as effective as traditional corded vacuums in removing allergens and should be coupled with deep vacuuming and even the best air purifier,' says cleaning influencer Nicola Rodriguez (AKA @essexhousedolly).

'To me personally, they are a quick fix to keep on top of large areas of flooring if you have pets, but not the solution for a clean floor.' So, you might still find that you'll have to mop after using a robot vacuum cleaner.

    They can get stuck

Most robot vacuum cleaners come with mapping technology, and they're often overrun with sensors to ensure that they don't get stuck in corners or under chairs.

But it can still happen. They can easily find themselves stuck in a corner, running out of battery, or even sucking up things you should never vacuum.

Final verdict: Are robot vacuum cleaners worth it?

In short, it all depends on your cleaning needs. For those who want the ease of knowing their house is relatively clean without too much fuss, a robot vacuum cleaner is definitely worth it. But for those who prefer to get involved and give their house a deep clean, it might not be worth your while.

FAQs Are robot vacuums as good as regular vacuums?

Due to their design, robot vacuum cleaners work best when they're on a flat surface with loose and obvious crumbs or dirt.

But while their suction qualities are constantly improving, those who require a deeper clean might want to opt for a traditional vacuum cleaner that has more power.

Are robot vacuums expensive to run?

On average, robot vacuum cleaners are cheaper than traditional vacuums. While a traditional vacuum cleaner runs on around 1.4kWh, you can normally charge a robot vacuum cleaner using between 60 and 90 watts.

I Tested A Robot Vacuum You Can Pick Up For Just £100

Spoiler alert: The bargain Vactidy Nimble T6 is really rather good

    Vactidy Nimble T6 robot vacuum

Robot vacuum cleaners are for posh people with big, expensive houses, right? They cost hundreds of pounds, right? Wrong on both counts, it seems.

Household electronics brand Vactidy has launched a new compact robot vacuum which we've found priced as low as £100. That's even cheaper than a half-decent upright vacuum. And this does the job for you.

It's the Vactidy Nimble T6, and it's by no means a cheap and nasty product. Out of the box there's a quality feel straight away, and it has all the bells and whistles of a robot vacuum costing four or five times more.

It has three levels of suction power, all the way up to 2,000pa, two spinning brushes to gather particles from the nooks and crannies, and it can take itself home to its base to charge, using on-board sensors. It even has a handheld remote control.

The Nimble T6 is also one of the most compact robot vacuums I've tested. Nimble by name, and by nature. It's only 2.89" high, and that's great for sneaking under beds and wardrobes. Or even pets.

Using a single rotating wheel to rotate on, along with its two rubber wheels, it's also very quick to spin and rotate, which is handy in tighter areas - like my living room, for example.

The Vactidy app is rather basic compared to some, but connecting up was done in one attempt, and if you select auto cleaning mode, it gets on with the job straight away.

You can, if you like, control the vacuum through a set of directional arrows in the app, just as you would with a remote control toy, and that's handy for picking up any areas the device may have missed because, truth be told, the mapping isn't all that smart.

It does detect the difference between carpets and hard floors, which is good to see, and there are four modes, including the conventional zig-zag pattern, and a random clean pattern, which works surprisingly well.

The battery isn't the best in the business, with a 2,500mAh battery on board, but it's plenty big enough to polish off most houses in one stint.

It's fairly quiet though, with pleasant beeps to let you know it's functioning, rather than a tinny voice, and it does connect up and play nicely with Alexa, which is handy.

The app will allow you to create schedules for the auto-cleaning function, but I did find it had an annoying habit of getting stuck in some parts of my house. Its size stands against it here, and it sometimes struggles with door thresholds. This won't bother people with clear, open-plan floors, but it was a bit of a niggle for me.

    Shark Duoclean Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Combining two unique technologies in one vacuum, this revolutionary vacuum cleaner easily glides from carpet, to wood floor, to upholstery, thanks to its super flexible design.

    Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Vacuum

It may be 5 years old, but the Dyson V8 still has plenty going for it - and its especially perfect for pet owners. The cord-free vacuum offers up to 40 minutes of powerful fade-free suction, and you'll receive three different head attachments to reach tricky areas and tackle pet hair.

    Shark Lift Away Vacuum Cleaner

The best thing about this option is that it converts from an upright to a portable vacuum cleaner within seconds, thanks to its handy Lift-Away Technology, making it perfect for stairs and above the head cleaning.

The suction is powerful, and the addition of a second rotating brush does make for a nice, wide sweep, but it's fair to say the performance is better on hard floors than it is on carpets. It is, when all's said and done, hard to find a robot vacuum that does a perfect job of thick pile carpet though.

And this brings me back to the price. The Vactidy Nimble T6 is available on Amazon at the moment for £119. And we found a few new ones on eBay for just £100.

It might not be a perfect all-rounder, but if you're on a budget and you fancy letting a robot take over your least favourite job, this is a superb entry to the world of automated cleaning.
