BJP appoints Union Ministers as State Head, trouble brewing?

BJP appointing Union Ministers as Party Heads of Telangana, Punjab, and Jharkhand might be signs of party infighting. The State Presidents of Telangana, Punjab and Jharkhand have been replaced by Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, Sunil Jakhar, and Babulal Marandi. Even the former Union Minister from Andhra Pradesh, G Purandeshwari has been appointed the State Party president for Andhra Pradesh along with Etela Rajender as the Election Management Committee Chairperson in Telangana, where state elections are due in November.

The change of the Telangana President and the Election Committee might be a damage control measure before the elections or an all-out effort to enhance the party’s presence before the General Elections due next year.

Telangana President Changed by BJP –Signs of Trouble?

Although the changes in Punjab and Jharkhand and even Andhra Pradesh, can be interpreted as the party’s move to strengthen its base in the state where they have an almost negligible presence, before the Parliamentary Elections in 2024, the change in Telangana President, is definitely not that simple. With the state elections due in November this year and the ruling BRS flexing its muscles stronger than ever, the Bhartiya Janata Party is hopeful to make its presence felt in the state. However, the change in the Party presidency in the State can be attributed to the pressure of the party members who happen to be against the current President Bandi Sanjay and were vehemently opposed to his Presidency.

Is BJP desperate to consolidate in Telangana?

It is also rumored that Etela Rajender, the face of the minority in the party has been dead against Bandi Sanjay and his lobby and had even threatened to resign if corrective measures were not taken by the Central body of the party in dismissing him from the party ranks. Quite a few, who happen to call the shots for the party in Telangana have been opposing the way Bandi Sanjay has been conducting himself, especially his attitude. “Reddy emerged as a consensus choice that was acceptable to both the factions,” said a senior BJP leader.

G Kishan Reddy, who is currently at the helm of affairs after being anointed as the Telangana Party President, happens to have a proven track record as far as his organizing capabilities and securing consensus among party ranks are concerned. He had spearheaded the party from 2002 to 2014 in Andhra Pradesh before Telangana was carved out from the State and had also been the Chief of the Party in Telangana from 2014 to 2016. However, it remains to be seen if the change of heads does bring a change of luck for BJP in the state in the upcoming elections.
