The Screen Distance feature launched by Apple for its iPhones and iPads running on iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 allows its users to work on the device without holding them too close to their eyes. Considering the fact that in today’s world, phones have become a part of the human body, the eyes happen to be the victim of such practices giving rise to myopia and related ophthalmologic ailments. Screen Distance – The application and its usage
The Screen Distance feature allows the device’s camera to measure the distance of the phone from the eyes. If the device is held in close proximity to the eyes, in this case, 12 inches or 1 foot, the device sends out an alert for the same. Once the phone is distanced, the phone would start functioning normally.
Models supporting the feature
The Face ID feature is mandatory for using the Screen Distance application and hence both iOS 17 and iPad 17 operating systems running on the device would populate the feature. Mentioned below are the names of the device models that support the feature:
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 11 series
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XR
- iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th generation)
However, the iPhone SE of the 2nd and 3rd generation having the Home button, doesn’t support the feature in spite of them supporting iOS 17 and iPadOS 17.
Turning off the Screen Distance Feature
- Open Settings option.
- Select Screen Time under Settings
- Choose the relevant option under Limit Usage.
- Toggle to turn it off or on.

Checking the Share Across Devices option
The very first step for the issue, where the feature cannot be turned on or off the Share Across settings needs to be checked using the below-mentioned steps:
- Open Settings Option.
- Choose Screen Time.
- Toggle the option.
Other troubleshooting steps
If the above step doesn’t resolve the issue, restarting the device can be a handy option as well. Also, restoring the device to its previous settings can also be tried out, however, the data backup needs to be performed for the same.
