Senate president Nicolae Ciuca said on Thursday evening that he believes very much in the National Liberal Party (PNL)’s capacity, in the PNL people, in the PNL’s determination to carry forward its history the Liberals enjoy talking about.

Nicolae Ciuca was asked on public broadcaster TVR Info whether the PNL will run alone or on joint lists with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in next year’s elections.

„I believe very much in the PNL’s Capacity, in the PNL’s people, in the PNL’s determination to carry forward that history we like to talk about. We rightly say that we are the oldest party in Europe, a history of 148 years, which we must honour. To honour the history of the PNL we have to work and we mustn’t look at what others are doing, we have to look at what we are doing. (…) When I made a decision, I did not think that I had to reap the rewards, you don’t make the decision for yourself, you make the decision for what has to go well. (…) The important thing is to make the right decision, it doesn’t matter who reaps the rewards. The fruits must be reaped by the Romanian people, the citizens of this country. We must not single out a particular direction, a particular party or a particular person. We need to see what we do with the political decision so that it benefits the citizens,” said Ciuca.

He noted that at the moment the PNL is very focused on what it has to do in government.

„We have a sustained economic development trend, but we also need to see what our problems are internally, because we have regions where disparities are quite obvious, the difference in quality of life between rural and urban areas is growing and we need to take measures so that life in the Romanian village does not end up where we all see it going. We really need to see how we find the necessary policies for the middle class. No developed country that we look up to as a model has managed to reach a level of development without a strong middle class,” said the PNL leader.
