Can Saudi Arabia and Israel Establish Normal Diplomatic Relations?

Yes, they can. Reportedly, a Middle East diplomat suggests that Saudi Arabia wants the United States to agree to Riyadh’s pursuit of a nuclear program as a condition for establishing normal diplomatic relations. However, this demand has been made before, and it does not appear that the U.S. will comply with it in the near future. Riyadh has shown reluctance to sign a normalization deal without closer defense cooperation with Washington.

For the United States, both Saudi Arabia and Israel are important allies, albeit in different contexts. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has been reevaluating its foreign policy and has made successful efforts to improve its relationships with Iran and Syria. However, the U.S. has not forgotten the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, and this, coupled with Crown Prince Mohammed’s reaffirmation of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to an independent Palestinian state, has affected the relationship.

Meanwhile, the credibility of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Washington has suffered. Saudi Arabia also expects serious diplomatic efforts from Israel, particularly regarding the use of Palestinian currency for trade. This is one of the reasons why Riyadh did not join the Abraham Accords.

If both countries can address these challenges and establish diplomatic relations, many positive outcomes can arise. Firstly, it could contribute to long-term peace in the Middle East. However, any understanding between the two nations must address the core points of contention, which can only be resolved through dialogue. Secondly, it is important to note that many Arabs may not currently support a policy of normalization with Israel. Thirdly, the nature of the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Israel will depend on the approach of the monarch in power at any given time. Finally, it is worth noting that while Israel and Saudi Arabia’s regional interests may align on certain issues, they may not necessarily align with Washington’s interests.

Nevertheless, if a deal is eventually struck between Tel Aviv and Riyadh, it could prove beneficial for both parties involved.
