ECP tells SC: Govt gives no funds for elections

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has submitted the progress report regarding the funds provision in the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The Supreme Court had ordered to submit the report regarding the funds by Tuesday.

The Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that the funds have not been received and money not transferred by SBP.

The Supreme Court had asked the State Bank to directly give funds to the Election Commission for the Punjab election.

However, cabinet meeting was held and subsequently National Assembly rejected the motion to grant funds for Punjab elections.

Earlier, Acting Governor State Bank had said that Ra21 billion has been allocated for the elections on the order of the Supreme Court.

A consultative meeting was also held under the chairmanship, in which the Minister of State for Finance, Special Assistant for Finance, officials of the Ministry of Finance participated.

In the consultation held before the special meeting of the Standing Committee on Finance of the National Assembly, the legal points regarding stopping the release of funds for the election were reviewed and a consultation was held on how the State Bank can be stopped from releasing the funds.

It should be noted that in the order issued last week by the 8-member bench of the Supreme Court, it was said that the State Bank should release money directly to the Election Commission for the elections in Punjab. 21 billion rupees will be given to the Election Commission.

The court ordered the State Bank and the Ministry of Finance to submit a report on the release of funds by April 18 and further said that the Election Commission should also submit a report on the receipt of Rs 21 billion funds to the court on April 18.
