The Gujrat kidney center is located in Gujrat which is a free home to almost all patients with kidney-related problems. A center that boasts a much-qualified staff, employees, and board of members with state-of-the-art 50 dialysis machines working 24/7. So, I happened to be there with my two sons, Zorain and Akbar, who drove all the way from Lahore only to be a part of this heartwarming affair at their annual general meeting.
The board of members thus witnessing and endorsing to what Mr. Mian Ejaz had to explain to the rest of the members. This was an august house, a galaxy of people representing different areas. Mr. Mazhar Deona of Germany, and myself, we were invited as the guests of honour while Ch. Mubasher graced the occasion as the chief guest. We were warmly welcomed by Javaid Butt and many others. The members were effusive, excited, and very enthusiastic.

The president of this club which of course is the Deputy Commissioner Mr. Virk, he joined us a little later. He is a very composed yet compassionate man with a captivating demeanor. He represents as completely opposite of an otherwise haughty and arrogant bureaucrat.
Mian Ejaz the backbone of this center threw light in his opening speech, and may I tell you that this project at this particular area, measuring more than one kanal is situated in the heart of the city. This place is known as Prince chowk, which was commonly referred to as Naz cinema in the olden days.
This particular area belonged to one social worker, who was a great lady in her time, her name was Mahmooda Ajiz, basically a migrant from Kashmir. She ran here a vocational institute by the name Qasr-e-Istiqlal. The influential women of that time just patronized this vocational institute and among them were late begum Akbar serving as its president and then after her demise begum Shamim Masood took control in the final days.
Anyhow, the erstwhile Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ali Chatta during his brief stint in Gujrat, he had a meeting with the in charge ladies of this particular vocational institute, in fact, it was a then defunct organization that was to be then converted to a welfare organization. Hence the establishment of this fabulous kidney center came into being mainly with the magnanimous support of the late Ch. Ahmed Saeed of the Service Industries, and now his sons are contributing hugely.

I would also like to mention the GFC family, Mian Ijaz, and Mian Ilyas, and Mubasher Ch., Azhar Ch., Ch. Ejaz of river garden, Ch. Mazhar of Deona, Nadeem Malhi, Javed Butt are a few names that took upon themselves the challenge of building it and running it, and a few of them are probably also members of its board.
Now it is being run with a perpetual contribution of millions by the God-fearing Souls of Gujrat and other glorified expatriates.
The operation is overseen by an erstwhile Medical Superintendent Mr. Abbas Gondal who is being assisted by a devout Mr. Sajjid Rathore. All in all, this is what’s happening. It’s a very transparent system that has gone on since 2015.
Its foundation was laid in 2015. It has gone on since then, unhindered and unimpeded. The number of patients runs in the thousands with 128,000 patients having received medical care and treatment. Of which 80% of patients were treated free of cost, 17% made partial payment while 3% made full payment.
The incoming deputy Commissioner was flabbergasted to know that we had 5o working machines. Personally, I have never been so happy to see how one charity organization is being run on a self-help basis. The interesting part is that all well-to-do people are managing it through their own resources.

I shall, including the other members of my family, go forth to take part in these philanthropic activities to the best of my capability and all the power that vests in me, by the grace of Allah be it spiritual, physical, or monetary. My tribute to Gujrat, to its organizers, and to people living in the city and all across the globe who have contributed to this noble cause and are continuing to contribute from time to time. May this center flourish without any problem. We can’t make do without the journalistic community which of course includes Mr. Younis Saqi of Dak, Raja Taimur of Jazba, Mahmood Akhtar, and Mudassar, and a few I can’t help mentioning their names.
