Chris Hipkins to succeed Ardern as PM?

Labour party’s Chris Hipkins is ready to become Prime Minister of New Zealand after predecessor Jacinda Ardern resigned on Thursday.

According to international media reports, Hipkins is the leader selected by the Labour Party to succeed outgoing PM Jacinda Ardern, after a shocking resignation on Thursday. Hipkins who has been a minister for education and policing, and one of the leading politicians behind New Zealand’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, has been finalized as the uncontested nominee to succeed Ardern in the elections.

Speaking on the matter, on Saturday, Hipkins said that it will be “the biggest responsibility and the biggest privilege” of his life. He added that the pressure that comes with such a responsibility is still “sinking in”. It is worth noting that Hipkins is set to face the biggest challenge of his political career by contending in the upcoming elections, a feat regarded by many to be a big deal without Ardern’s “star power”.

Honouring his predecessor, and an “incredible prime minister”, Hipkins said Ardern “provided calm, stable, reassuring leadership” which he hopes to continue once he is PM. 

Speaking on the challenges faced by Jacinda Ardern, he acknowledged that she had received threats and abuse, specifically because of Covid-19. Hipkins said, “There has been an escalation in vitriol, and I want to acknowledge that some politicians have been the subject of that more than others”. He added that Ardern is among leaders who have received some “absolutely intolerable and unacceptable behaviour.”

Although there is no guarantee that Hipkins would select a woman leader to serve alongside him, speaking on the matter he said that the country has “a gender balanced parliament” for the first time in New Zealand’s history. A move, which he says is “fantastic”. 

When asked if he is hopeful of winning the elections scheduled for 14 October, Hipkins responded, “Yes.”

On the other hand, outgoing PM Jacinda Ardern since announcing that she is stepping down from the position in office has said that she has “no regrets”. Speaking on Friday outside an airport in Napier, where the Labour Party caucus had gathered for a retreat, Ms Ardern said she had “slept well for the first time in a long time”, according to reports of Pakistan Times Today.
