What do the Ukrainians want?

It is the right of people of Ukraine to decide their country’s political future.

Unfortunately, Russia is attacking not only the military targets but also civilian infrastructures. Although attacks on civilian and utilities/ infrastructure that make civil life making survival miserable and unsustainable is a violation of international humanitarian law.

Dmytro Kuleba Ukraine government official [Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine] tweeting on January 9th, 2023 said:

That, dear readers is the crux!

Putin made a grievous error of judgement in thinking that Ukraine will not be supported militarily  by others to face Russia. This effectively takes us to the rational conclusion that it will be a long-drawn-out conflict with no quick end in sight. Winters are tough for any ongoing conflict. Russia of course will step up intensity of attacks in on the Civil infrastructure aimed at breaking the will of the civil population.

However, Ukraine will be better equipped to face the Russian Army with winter equipment being sent by Canada, UK and Germany.

Peace negotiations can only come once at least one side is on a weaker wicket. Or dealing from a position of less strategic advantage, so to speak. Right now, this does not seem to be happening. The battle will continue on multidimensional fronts, dragging through 2023. Russia will not stop her offenses. What is very clear is neither will Ukraine stop fighting back.

However, the miscalculation by Putin, of assuming other nations to play a passive role-has backfired. Nations that made such heavy miscalculations faced a very heavy price. USSR in Afghanistan. USA again in Afghanistan & Vietnam. In the end the invading power had to make a choice. To stay, fight on, with no end in sight. This can lead to shift in strategy within Russia. Leading to a decision of an ‘honorable’ exit. A ground awarded for face saving. Retreat.
