Israelis protest the new Netanyahu regime

Thousands of Israelis demonstrated in Tel Aviv on Saturday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new cabinet, which is considered the most conservative in Israeli history.

In the beachfront city of Tel Aviv, protesters carried placards with phrases such as “Democracy in jeopardy” and “Together against fascism and racism.”

Some carried Israeli and rainbow flags, while others hoisted a giant banner that said “crime minister” – a common term used by Israelis at regular rallies against Netanyahu over the last few years.

Following his election victory on November 1, Netanyahu assumed office at the head of a coalition with extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish parties, some of whose officials currently serve as ministers.

It includes a lawmaker who committed tax cheating late last year and a group of far-right figures, including one who previously housed a photo of a murderer who murdered dozens of Palestinian worshipers in his home.

Netanyahu, who is 73 years old and pursuing corruption accusations in court, has already led Israel from 1996 to 1999 and 2009 to 2021, longer than anybody else in Israeli history.

“My grandparents immigrated to Israel to construct something extraordinary… We do not like to have the impression that our democracy is vanishing and that the Supreme Court will be abolished “Assaf, an attorney among the demonstrators, provided his name only.

“Extremists are beginning to deploy their troops, but they are not the majority,” said Omer, a demonstrator and IT worker in Tel Aviv.

The Israeli administration has declared its determination to expand settlements in the occupied West Bank and implement social changes that have alarmed many.

This week, Israel’s new justice minister presented a reform proposal that included a “derogation provision” permitting the legislature to overrule Supreme Court judgments.

On Twitter, opposition leader Yair Lapid stated that the amendments “threaten the whole judicial system of the State of Israel.”
