Stanford Researchers Uncover Mastodon’s Vast Child Abuse Material Issue



Stanford Researchers have made a momentous discovery surrounding Mastodon, the decentralized network often perceived as a promising alternative to Twitter. Per the findings from Stanford's Internet Observatory, the platform grapples with a grave quandary of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). In an astonishingly brief span of just two days, the researchers chanced upon 112 instances of well-known CSAM, scattered amidst a staggering total of 325,000 posts.


To execute their research, the Internet Observatory meticulously scrutinized the 25 most popular Mastodon instances for any telltale signs of CSAM. To further augment their endeavors, they enlisted Google's SafeSearch API, which efficaciously identified explicit images. Moreover, the researchers sought the aid of PhotoDNA, an exceedingly potent tool for flagging CSAM content. Impressively, the team discovered 554 pieces of content, each inexorably linked to hashtags and keywords frequently employed by child sexual abuse groups in the digital realm. Google SafeSearch categorically classified all these content pieces as explicit, asserting the "highest confidence."


Alarming in its implications, the open posting of CSAM seems to be distressingly widespread. The researchers documented 713 instances of the top 20 CSAM-related hashtags proliferating throughout the Fediverse, pervading posts containing multimedia content. In addition, they observed 1,217 text-only posts alluding to "off-site CSAM trading or grooming of minors." The sheer prevalence of this issue is a cause for deep-seated concern.


A disturbing incident involving CSAM posted on Mastodon led to an extended outage for the mastodon.xyz server. The server's sole custodian disclosed that moderation was conducted in their scarce spare time, causing potential delays of a few days. Unlike colossal operations like Meta, boasting a global cadre of contractors, this server relies solely on the tireless efforts of one individual.


Although prompt action was taken against the disconcerting content, the mastodon.xyz domain faced suspension, rendering the server temporarily inaccessible to users until the listing was restored. Subsequently, the registrar incorporated the domain into a "false positive" list to avert future takedowns. However, as the researchers emphatically underline, the action taken was anything but based on a false positive.


The gravity of the issue was underscored by David Thiel, one of the researchers, who divulged that they stumbled upon more photoDNA hits in a mere two-day period than ever before in their organization's history of social media analysis. He expressed profound concern over the inadequate tools employed by centralized social media platforms to address child safety matters.


The burgeoning popularity of decentralized networks like Mastodon has engendered legitimate safety concerns. Unlike mainstream sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit, decentralized networks delegate moderation to individual instances, potentially fostering inconsistencies throughout the Fediverse. To surmount these challenges, the researchers propose that platforms like Mastodon integrate more robust tools for moderators, seamlessly incorporate PhotoDNA integration, and establish efficient CyberTipline reporting mechanisms.
