Here is everything about the all-new Android 14 for TV

With new features and improvements, Google is releasing Android 14 for TVs. Multitasking, performance, sustainability, and accessibility are the main priorities of the new operating system. With its picture-in-picture mode, viewers will be able to multitask and watch multiple videos simultaneously. There will also be a number of energy modes available for consumers to regulate how much energy they use. Better navigation, enhanced text options, and colour correction are a couple of accessibility features. Additionally, the Android TV home screen will now feature Gemini AI.

“We’re bringing Android 14 to TV! The next generation of Android provides improvements in performance, sustainability, accessibility, and multitasking to help you build engaging apps for TVs,” Shobana Radhakrishnan – Senior Director of Engineering, Google TV, and Paul Lammertsma – Developer Relations Engineer said in a blog post.

First off, Android TV now supports Gemini AI. With the help of Gemini, Google will be bringing customised descriptions for videos and TV series to the Android TV home screen.

According to the company, Android 14 for TV has improved the previous generation of OS offering a faster and more responsive TV experience focusing on performance and sustainability. New energy modes have been added giving users more control in reducing TV’s standby power consumption. Ensure your app integrates with MediaSession correctly to prevent content from continuing when input modes change or the panel switches off.

In terms of accessibility features such as color correction, enhanced text options, and improved navigation for users comes with the new Android 14 for TV. These can be toggled on or off using remote shortcuts.

For multitasking, Picture-in-picture mode is now supported on qualified Android 14 TV models. While PiP support was introduced in Android 8.0 (API level 26), it was not widely supported on Android TV, and not supported at all on Google TV prior to Android 13. However, this feature is reserved for supported Android 14 TV models, with newer and premium models more likely to receive it. The function allows two separate apps to coexist on the screen: one running in full screen, with a second running in PiP mode.
