PlayStation 6: Launch date, Expected Price, Specs and more

It took Sony nearly three years to fix the supply chain issues that affected the PlayStation 5. The gaming console that took the world by storm upon its release in 2020 wasn’t the only victim of this issue. The global semiconductor shortage created supply chain problems for automakers and tech giants alike. Now that it has been four years since the launch of the PlayStation 5, rumours about the next-generation PS console are already brimming on the Internet. Sony has kept a tight lid on the progress of the PlayStation 6, but fans of the gaming console are already excited about what the next generation will bring. From a slimmer form factor to 8K gaming, the upcoming PS6 could redefine the gaming experience.

PlayStation 6: Expected launch date

Earlier this year, Sony confirmed that the PS5 will be entering the latter half of its lifecycle. If that is the case, the PlayStation 6 should already be in its development phase. Typically, Sony releases a new gaming console every seven to eight years. Going by the previous trends and Sony’s recent announcements, we could be looking at a 2028 release for the PS6. PlayStation launches usually take place towards the end of the calendar, just before the holiday season. So, a November 2028 release could be on the cards for the PS6 if everything goes according to plan.

PlayStation 6: Expected price

The PlayStation 5 was launched at $399 in 2020. Its updated ‘Slim’ variant, which was introduced last year and is currently on sale, is priced at $499. The relatively cheaper PS5 Digital Edition is priced at $449. Given past pricing trends, the PlayStation 6 will likely cost $100 more than the existing version. At the time of launch, the next-gen PS6 will be priced around $600.

PlayStation 6: Expected specs and features

At this point, commenting on the design of the upcoming PS6 is purely speculative. Sony had struck gold with the design of the PS5, which was a radical departure from its outgoing counterpart. While we expect the PlayStation 6 to maintain the ‘taller’ form factor, Sony could make it more compact and lighter than the current-gen PS5 Slim.

Sony will continue its partnership with AMD to power future PlayStation consoles. The next AMD chipset is expected to arrive in 2025 and it could be the one that handles the processing duties on Sony’s next gaming console. This will also benefit its backwards compatibility. The PS6 will also get a storage boost, offering 1TB of internal storage. The current-gen PlayStation is available with 825GB of internal storage. A bump in storage also suggests that Sony could launch the PS6 in a digital-only avatar.

Talking about the features, the PlayStation 6 could also incorporate built-in wireless into its console. While the PlayStation already has wireless connectivity through Bluetooth and WiFi, the addition of wireless charging pads would give users the option to charge their accessories. If this happens, it would definitely bump the ‘cool’ factor of the PS6.

Conclusion

The PlayStation 5 is still a few years away, but it will be interesting to see how the current trends in technology develop in that time frame. We’re already seeing AI gain significant footing in Android smartphones. Sony could do something similar with the PS6, although the impact of AI is limited to video game development for now.
