Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Here is how to watch the cosmic event in India and other regions today

There will be a first Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8, which is also known as Surya Grahan in India. The majestic solar event will be seen in different parts of the world but mainly in North America, including Mexico, the US, and Canada. After this, there won’t be another total solar eclipse in the same region for another 20 years.

This year’s first solar eclipse will be witnessed in various parts of the world on Monday. The first annular Solar Eclipse will not be visible in the rest of the world, albeit a few additional regions will be able to witness it to some extent. An annular solar eclipse is characterised by the appearance of a ring of fire in the sky. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

Beginning at 11:07 AM PDT on the Pacific coast of Mexico, the eclipse will conclude at 5:16 PM NDT on the Atlantic shore of Newfoundland, Canada. Over a distance of 185 km, the total solar eclipse moves across North America, travelling through Mexico, across the United States from Texas to Maine, and out across Canada’s Atlantic coast. It will be visible in up to eighteen different US states. India would not be able to see the total solar eclipse as it will begin a couple of hours after the sun sets, at 9:12 PM IST. On April 9, the eclipse will go into totality at 10:08 PM IST and come to an end at 2:22 AM IST.

If you are located in one of the above-mentioned locations, then it will be visible with your own eyes. The most important thing to remember when witnessing a total solar eclipse is safety. Make sure you know when to wear specialised eye protection made for viewing solar radiation. We would caution you against using your naked eyes to view the event.

Consider donning protective sunglasses or dark glasses before venturing outside as the damaging UV rays could cause irreversible eye damage, potentially resulting in blindness. Make sure you use black polymer, welding glass, or aluminized Mylar before you watch the solar eclipse (shade number 14).

What is an annular solar eclipse?

For those who don’t know, a solar eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are all in alignment. It is known as a partial or full solar eclipse when the Earth is completely covered in the shadow created by the Moon. However, during an annular solar eclipse, the moon crosses in front of the sun and obscures half or all of it from Earth’s perspective.
