Wrestlers Protest: Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat resume jobs but say protest against WFI chief to continue

Wrestling champions Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat met Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence to talk about their protests against the WFI chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

‘They shared their concern with the Home Minister. The meeting was long and he listened to everything. But koi decision nhi hua abhi tak (no decision has been reached so far),’ a source close to the wrestlers told IANS.

Singh is being accused by the Olympians of sexually harassing numerous wrestlers, including a minor.

The wrestlers had claimed that they wanted to throw their medals into the Ganges when they traveled to Haridwar.

They decided to give the medals to the leaders of the farmers so they could take a call.

The wrestlers have said the protests will continue, even as Malik and Punia have resumed their duties as Officer on Special Duty (Sports) in the Indian Railways.

Reacting to the news of calling off the protest after meeting the Home Minister, Malik tweeted, ‘This news is completely wrong. In the fight for justice, none of us has backed down, nor will we. Along with Satyagraha, I am fulfilling my responsibility in Railways. Our fight continues till justice is served. Please don’t spread any wrong news.’

Punia tweeted, ‘The news of withdrawing the movement is just a rumour. These news are being spread to harm us.’

We have neither retreated nor have we withdrawn the movement. The news of women wrestlers raising FIR is also false. The fight will continue till justice is served ???? #WrestlerProtest”

In response to the wrestlers’ demand for action, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Monday attacked the government.

He predicted that the BJP MP would not be arrested, that a ‘wishy-washy’ chargesheet would be filed, and that he would be granted bail.

In a tweet, Sibal said, ‘Amit Shah meets team of wrestlers. Wrestling for solutions. My prediction: No arrest. Wishy-washy chargesheet will be filed. Brij Bhushan will be granted bail. Then they will say matter is sub-judice!’

The Delhi Police on April 28 had registered two FIRs against Singh at the Connaught Place police station, including one on the basis of a complaint from the father of a minor wrestler, invoking the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, that entails a prison term of up to seven years on conviction.

Singh has denied all the charges.
