Before unwrapping my laptop list, I would like to discuss the laptop’s hardware requirements; it will help you to understand which notebook you should go with.

According to the official MathWorks website, the system requirements for MATLAB and Simulink are below:

  • Operating System: Windows (7 SP1, 10, Server 2016, Server 2019, MacOS 10.12 and above, Linux – Ubuntu 14.04 and above, RED Hat 6.7 and above, SUSE Desktop 12 and above, SUSE Server 12 and above
  • Processor: Any Intel or AMD x86-64 processor with four logical cores and AVX2 support
  • Memory: 8 GB

As per my experience, MATLAB performs similarly on Windows, Mac, and Linux except in few situations such as graphics-heavy operations, or using third-party libraries. It’s much convenient to go with the same operating system you’re already working with, especially if you’re switching to Linux which has the steep learning curve.

However, OS selection depends on how much money you can spend. If you have a limited budget, then you have only options to choose from Window or Linux machine. While the MacBook has a high starting point, but if you’re looking for the most reliable notebook, you should undoubtedly grab an Apple laptop, if you can afford it. There is another great thing about the Apple MacBook, you can install the Windows OS alongside, which is even a versatile option and not easily possible with other laptops.

Processor OR CPU (Central Processing Unit)

Usually, the computer with more CPU cores can outrun those with a lower number of cores, but the result would differ with MATLAB application. However, many MATLAB applications have the parallelism for taking the max hardware advantage, but all functions aren’t multithreaded; therefore, the speed would vary.
