During the summer of 1942, twenty-two-year-old Franci Rabinek, who was identified as a Jew by the Nazi racial laws, arrived in Terezin, which was both a concentration camp and a ghetto located forty miles north of her home in Prague. Terezin was a part of the Terezin ghetto. It was the beginning of her odyssey that would take her from Terezin to the Czech family camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau, to the slave labour camps in Hamburg, and finally to Bergen Belsen, which would last for a total of three years. She did not make it back to Prague until April 1945, after the city had been freed by the British.

Franci was known as the Prague fashion designer who lied to Dr. Mengele during a selection at Auschwitz. She said that she was an electrician, which was an occupation that simultaneously put her life in risk and saved it. In this memoir, she delivers an emotional, forthright, and oftentimes humorous account of those dark years with the women convicts who were a part of her close-knit circle of friends when she was incarcerated.

The harrowing experiences of one young woman who braved the atrocities committed during the Holocaust and emerged unscathed are recounted in the book Franci’s War.
