New York: According to agencies, the United Nations General Assembly recently overwhelmingly endorsed a Palestinian request for full UN membership by acknowledging their eligibility to join and advising the U.N. Security Council to review the matter positively.
The assembly passed a resolution with 143 votes in favor, 9 against, and 25 abstentions. Although this resolution doesn’t grant Palestinians full U.N. membership, it acknowledges their eligibility to become members.
The General Assembly’s vote, comprising 193 members, served as a global indicator of support for the Palestinian aspiration to achieve full U.N. membership, a step that would essentially acknowledge the existence of a Palestinian state.
The resolution states that “the State of Palestine … should therefore be admitted to membership” and suggests that the Security Council view the matter positively for reconsideration.
