36 OneWeb satellites successfully launched by ISRO

Chennai: Indian space agency officials have confirmed that the Bahubali Rocket has completed its historic mission without any hitch.

India’s heavy-lift rocket the about 640-ton Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII) was nicknamed ‘Bahubali’ when it flew with the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft.

The rocket renamed LVM3 M2 is on a historic mission of carrying 36 OneWeb Satellites weighing about six tons to sling them into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). India Bahubali satellite rocket India Bahubali satellite rocket

This is the first time the rocket was used to carry foreign satellites. All these years the GSLV MkIII rocket was used to carry India’s communication satellite and other payloads.

After the recent failures of Isro, the Small Satelite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) failed on its maiden launch and similarly, a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) mission too failed.

Apart from the OneWeb satellites, a lot more will be riding on the LVM3 rocket.

ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space S. Somanath that with the LVM3 rocket India can fill the vacant slot in the global market catering to the companies launching a constellation of satellites.

ISRO will also launch another set of 36 OneWeb satellites in 2023.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is the space agency of India. ISRO’s own Lunar and interplanetary missions along with other scientific projects encourage and promote science education, apart from providing valuable data to the scientific community which in turn enriches science.

ISRO has its headquarters in Bengaluru. Its activities are spread across various centres and units. Launch Vehicles are built at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram; Satellites are designed and developed at U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC), Bengaluru; Integration and launching of satellites and launch vehicles are carried out from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), Sriharikota; Development of liquid stages including cryogenic stage is carried out at Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), Valiamala& Bengaluru; Sensors for Communication and Remote Sensing satellites and application aspects of the space technology are taken up at Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad and Remote Sensing satellite data reception processing and dissemination is entrusted to National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad.
