Delicious Baked Ziti Recipe And How To Store It

What is ziti pasta?

Ziti is a kind of pasta that looks like a smooth tube and is hollow, like a short straw. It was made in either Campagna or Sicily, both in Italy. The Italians may have called this dish “bride or groom” for different reasons, but the name means either bride or groom. In some parts of Italy, it’s a common wedding food.

Most of the time, pasta is boiled before being mixed with the sauce. When the tomato sauce is almost done cooking, the pasta is added to it. After the tomato sauce has been spread on the pasta, Cheese is added. Usually, a mix of ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan is used. With the cheese, you can add other things like ground pork, sausage, mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Mixing the ingredients and cooking them with mozzarella cheese on top until the cheese melts makes a hot meal. If you can’t find Ziti, use other tube-shaped pasta like penne or rigatoni instead.

Comparison Between Ziti and Lasagna

There are similarities in the parts, but there are big differences in the amount of time needed and the result. You can make Baked Ziti in just a few minutes, but it takes hours to make lasagna. When making lasagna, it’s important to take your time and layer the ingredients so that they all cook at the same rate and the pasta doesn’t get too dry. All this effort is generally worth it because the final product is a deliciously layered meal in which each mouthful is quite uniform.

Besides being delicious, simple, and flavorful, it’s also a breeze. Baked Ziti with ricotta is a tasty alternative to traditional lasagna that is easy to make. We bake Ziti with meat sauce and a lot of cheese instead of lasagna noodles. It costs less than pasta at restaurants and tastes better.

You can change the baked Ziti here so that it fits your tastes. Spike the recipe with some sneaky greens like spinach, peas, carrots, etc. Alternately, try a new combination of cheeses, experiment with a new kind of meat, like sausage, or spice up the sauce with some extra herbs. This dish would be welcome at our table daily, as everyone in our family loves it.

Ingredients in Baked Ziti

This is a very common way to make baked Ziti, but any good cook will add their special touches. Some people leave out the tomato sauce or switch up the cheeses and meats they use to make a casserole with a lot of cheese. This one needs a lot of Italian sausages and a very important fresh herb. One example of a summer herb is basil. In the winter, rosemary is a great choice. You could also use savory, sage, thyme, or parsley.

Alternatives For Ziti

Ziti is easy to find in most grocery stores, but penne pasta will work just as well if you can’t find it. Choose a short, thick pasta shape to get the most out of the sauce and meat.

Baked Ziti With Tomato Sauce

In the list of ingredients, there is a link to a recipe for pasta sauce. However, you can use ready-made sauce in this dish, like pasta sauce, marinara sauce, or even pizza sauce. Just make sure the sauce is good.

How To Store Ziti, Heat It, And Freeze It

You can put this together and freeze or chill it before baking it for the last time. If you freeze it, let it thaw in the fridge overnight before you bake it. You can also freeze-baked Ziti and thaw it or heat it from frozen.

· Putting a prepared but unbaked ziti in the fridge before baking it. Wrap the finished Ziti in foil and put it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Take off the foil before baking, and bake at 350°F until the cheese is melted and the top is lightly browned. Instead of baking it as soon as it’s put together, add at least 15 minutes to the baking time.

· Baking an assembled, unbaked ziti after freezing it: Before baking, frozen Ziti that hasn’t been baked should be put in the fridge overnight to thaw. Take it out of the fridge 30 minutes before you bake it. Get rid of all of the plastic wrap. Bake, uncovered, at 350°F for 60 to 70 minutes, until bubbling and lightly browned. Cover with foil if the top browns before the inside are done cooking.

· You can freeze baked Ziti and heat it: Cover with foil and bake at 350°F. (Make sure to take off all the plastic wrap first.) How frozen the lasagna is and what size pan you use will affect how long you cook it. Reheat food that has been frozen, or that has been thawed. Expect it to take at least 35–45 minutes, but make sure the center reaches 165°F.

IS BAKED ZITI JUST LASAGNA?

Baked Ziti combines marinara sauce, ricotta cheese, and mozzarella with pasta made with an extruder. In a lasagna, pasta sheets, sauce (typically a meat sauce), ricotta cheese, and mozzarella are layered and baked. Even if the ingredients are virtually identical, the time commitment and ultimate output can vary considerably. In contrast to lasagna, Baked Ziti may be prepared rapidly. When preparing lasagna, it is essential to layer the ingredients carefully, taking care not to use too much sauce so that the noodles become soggy, but also not to use too little sauce, so they become dry.

As a result of its many flavorful layers, lasagna is often more visually appealing than other dishes. In terms of measurements, however, baked Ziti is typically more forgiving. Each bite, however, is unique and lacks the same plating appeal because the ingredients are combined rather than layered. Although the ingredients are essentially identical, the dish is still extremely delicious.

Special mouthwatering recipe

Use 1 teaspoon of dried oregano, dried basil, and dried thyme in place of Italian seasoning in the cupboard.
Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 55 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 15 minutes
Servings 8
Calories 557kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ziti or penne pasta
  • Kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 8 ounces of mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan or pecorino cheese
  • 1 heaping cup of ricotta cheese
  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh rosemary or basil
  • 1 pound bulk Italian sausage, ground beef, or ground pork
  • 4 cups jarred marinara or pasta sauce, or make your tomato sauce

Instructions

1.      Preheat the oven: the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

  • Prepare the pasta: A pot of salted water should be heated to a rolling boil using one tablespoon of salt for every two quarts. Pasta should be added and cooked at a rolling boil, uncovered until it is al dente—edible but a touch firm to the bite—or until it is tender.
  • Pasta should be drained using a colander. While preparing the sauce, toss the pasta with a little olive oil to prevent it from sticking together.
  • Make the meat brown: Start working on the sauce while the water is heating from the previous step. In a sizable sauté pan over medium-high heat, warm 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the bulk sausage or ground pork after the oil is shimmering hot. As the sausage cooks, break up any particularly large pieces.
  • Make it brown: It will be more difficult for the meat to brown if you stir too frequently. Add a little salt if replacing the sausage with ground beef or pork.
  • Create the sauce: Add the onions to the meat once it has mostly browned, and stir everything together well. Cook everything for 4 to 5 minutes or until the onions are translucent and starting to brown.
  • Stir in the garlic, basil or rosemary, red pepper flakes, and Italian seasoning. After 1 minute of cooking, add the tomato sauce and thoroughly stir. Simmer for a while. If necessary, salt and pepper the sauce after tasting it.
  • Put the casserole together: In the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish, thinly spread the sauce, then sprinkle half of the ricotta cheese over the top. After thoroughly stirring the pasta with a teaspoon of sauce, add the spaghetti to the casserole. The remaining sauce should be poured over the pasta before the mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses are added, along with the remaining ricotta cheese. At this point, you can prepare ahead of time by cooling, covering, and freezing.
  • Bake: For 20 to 25 minutes, bake the dish uncovered at 350°F in the oven until the cheese is melted and the top is gently browned. 10 minutes should pass before serving.

DO YOU PUT EGG IN RICOTTA CHEESE FOR BAKED ZITI

This ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan baked ziti recipe is so delicious! Delicious pasta topped with marinara sauce and three kinds of cheese!
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 (32 ounce) jar of spaghetti sauce
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 (16 ounce) package of ziti pasta
  • 24 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 pound shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • Set the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • While you wait, bring a big pot of lightly salted water to a boil. After 8 to 10 minutes, or until it is al dente, drain and rinse the Ziti.
  • Mix the cooked Ziti, ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, egg, and 1 1/2 cups of spaghetti sauce in a medium bowl. Pour the rest of the spaghetti sauce on top, along with the Parmesan cheese. Move the mixture to the dish that has been set up for baking.
  • After 30 minutes in a preheated oven, the food should cool for 15 minutes before being served.

What Cheese Should I Use In My Baked Ziti?

This Ziti uses FOUR kinds of cheese:

  • Mozzarella – 8 oz.
  • Parmesan – 1 cup
  • Ricotta – 1 cup
  • Provolone – 8-12 slices from the deli

How To Keep Baked Ziti From Drying Out

Four key culprits to a dried-out ziti are:

  • There is not enough sauce,
  • The noodles aren’t cooked until JUST AL DENTE and overcook while baking
  • The noodles aren’t thoroughly and evenly coated with sauce
  • The edges of the noodles are exposed and subject to drying out

How To Layer Baked Ziti

In the baking dish, mix half the noodles with the remaining sauce until the noodles completely covered.

  • Add a few ricotta cheese dollops on top,
  • Slices of provolone cheese and mozzarella cheese should then be added.
  • Repeat this once more, starting with the sauce and adding the cheeses in layers.
  • Ensure the pasta is covered in sauce and the ends are not sticking out.
  • Add some freshly grated parmesan cheese to the top of the Ziti, then bake it uncovered at 375 degrees for 30 minutes or until the cheese is melty and gooey.

Due to the parboiling of the penne noodles, most of the cooking time spent melting the cheese. If the oven is sufficiently preheated, it should only take about 30 minutes to complete.

If desired, you can also place the Ziti under the broiler to get the bubbly, browned cheese on top.

SHOULD BAKED ZITI BE BAKED COVERED OR UNCOVERED?

It should baked without a lid, so the pasta doesn’t “steam,” and the top can get brown. The Ziti shouldn’t dry out as long as all the noodles well-covered with sauce. But you can do that if you want to. To keep the cheese from sticking, spray some foil with cooking spray, cover it for only half of the cooking time, and then take it off for the last few minutes of baking.

Can We Switch Out The Noodles?

You can use penne noodles instead of ziti noodles if you don’t have any. Despite being longer and thinner, they will still catch the sauce inside. You have baked Ziti that is perfectly cooked if you follow our instructions. The noodles won’t be dry, bland, overcooked or undercooked. You won’t prepare baked Ziti again, only this time!

How Should Frozen Ziti Reheated?

Take the Ziti out of the freezer 24 hours before cooking if you have the time. This ought to give it enough time to defrost. Cover the Ziti with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes at 350°F. When a knife inserted into the dish comes out hot, and the cheese has completely melted, remove the foil and continue baking. Then continue to cook as normal.

Can This Be Frozen?

Yes. The Ziti should bakes and allowes to cool until it reaches about 70°F on the counter. NEVER “quickly” cool a heated object by putting it in the refrigerator. Once the Ziti has cooled, wrap it in foil and put it in the freezer.

  • In the meantime, add the pasta to rapidly simmering but not boiling water. Cook, stirring periodically, for about 6 minutes or until the pasta is al dente but has a little bite.

  • Add fresh Parmesan cheese on top, then bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees, uncovered. To get a nice brown bubbly cheese, place the Ziti under the broiler for a few minutes.

WHAT IS ANOTHER NAME FOR BAKED ZITI?

  • Penne, which is simple to find
  • Mostaccioli
  • Rigatoni can be used in place of them, albeit the latter has considerably broader tubes.

Baked Mostaccioli

Mostaccioli is a baked pasta dish with Italian sausage, peppers, onions, garlic, marinara, and a lot of mozzarella and provolone cheese. It’s the best kind of comfort food for kids. It will please!

It’s a filling dinner, but I like to serve it with Triple Cheese Garlic Bread and Italian Chopped Salad with Fresh Italian Dressing for a complete meal that’s good for guests.

How To Make Baked Mostaccioli

First, bring a large pot full of salted water to a boil. Follow the directions on the package to cook your mostaccioli noodles until they are al dente, and drain them very well. Cook the sausage at the same time in a large skillet over medium heat. When they are almost done browning, add the green pepper and onions. Cook until the onions and green peppers start to get soft. The next step is to add the minced garlic and cook it for a minute. Now take the pan off the heat and pour out any extra grease.

Take the proteins pasta, sausage mixture, and marinara then mixed in a big casserole dish. Next, top the spaghetti mixture with grated Parmesan, shredded mozzarella, and provolone cheese. Lastly, bake for about 25 minutes or until the cheese melts and lightly browned.

What To Serve With It

  • Italian Salad
  • Garden Salad
  • Bread Sticks
  • Garlic Cheese Bread
  • Minestrone Soup
  • Puff Pastry Pinwheels
  • Creamy Cucumber Tomato Salad
  • Fresh Fruit Salad

RECIPE

  1. Cook the mostaccioli until they are al dente or still slightly firm. You want to cook it sparingly, given that it will be roasted alongside the meat, vegetables, and sauce.
  2. Penne, Ziti, or rigatoni are some additional pasta options.
  3. Use Italian sausage of a high caliber. Since most butcher shops prepare their own, it tastes far better than the packaged sausage that contains so many preservatives.
  4. You can use ground beef, ground turkey, or ground pork for the sausage.
  5. To ensure that you get a small amount of each in practically every bite, chop the green pepper and onion pretty finely.
  6. Use a nice, high-quality marinara. With jarred marinara, they have come a long way. Some of them have surprisingly wonderful flavors and no preservatives.
  7. Shred and grate your cheese right off the block. In this manner, cellulose, additional enzymes, and preservatives will not be present.
  8. Add fresh, cooked chopped spinach, mushrooms, zucchini, or ricotta cheese for a change of pace.
  9. For up to three days, keep leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container. Reheat in the microwave using less energy.
  10. Cool thoroughly before freezing, then wrap in two layers of plastic. Place for up to two months on a level surface in the freezer. Reheat in the microwave after thawing in the refrigerator overnight.
