Cianfrance has demonstrated in his films a rare ability to show viewers the ugly and obvious side of life. This makes his work uncomfortable to see because it is deep and no different here. Cianfrance like to root everything in unaffected naturalism. He clings to the performance of each actor, choosing to focus on the emotions of the characters with rhythms of dialogue or intelligent camera movements.

It goes without saying that I know this much is true is that the light is not there. It is a painful proof of everyday tragedies that follow us throughout life, like the beloved of the ancient Greek myth. Occasionally Dominick flirts with the idea that his family may be damned, but I know this much is true that this is the very true argument that the cycle of pain can only be broken by grace. Sins must be forgiven with reconciliation, and loss can only exist where there is love first.
