The Film is about the real story of Peter, a Black who had been forced to work in the White House as a slave. However, this film does not have much historical accuracy and it is not a documentary. It is more of a drama movie, which shows the struggle of African-Americans in the mid-19th century. The actors do their respective roles very well and Will Smith was amazing while playing his role in the movie. The cinematography was amazing too. Many people liked the way they showed the slaves running away from freedom and how sad and helpless they looked. The audience liked that they used some techniques to show young men what life was like. 

The storyline of “Emancipation”

The film is the story of a slave. Peter was a middle age African-American man who was forcefully set aside from his family and worked as a laborer on the plantation. In America, at that time black people were a slave to white people. This movie is about escape. Peter and some slaves and able to escape from that plantation. The movie will tell you what problem Peter faces when he escapes from that place. After that, he joined the Union Army.

Is the “Emancipation” movie based on a true story? 

“Emancipation” is based on true events in Alabama in 1864. The plot is inspired by a true story that occurred in 1863. This film is based on the only recorded slave rebellion in Alabama. The slaves were freed and fled to Union lines. Though their whereabouts are unknown, this is one of the only recorded slave rebellions in U.S. History. It was so successful that it became a legend for those who went through slavery in America.

Who is the real Peter?

Peter was also known as Whipped Peter or Gordon Will Smith’s portrayal of Peter, a slave-turned-soldier is based on the true story of “Black Bart” (real name Benjamin Cooper), a former slave who participated in the US Civil War and escaped to Canada. He later became a constable for the government which helped him to save his and other slaves from house arrest, imprisonment, or death.

• The review by Alicia Lutes gave the film a positive review saying, “But it also has close to zero historical accuracy. As a work of historical fiction, Emancipation would be more believable if it were less enjoyable to watch.”
• Sam Cohen for the Chicago Sun-Times: “It’s a well-made, earnest film that could have been considerably better if it had shared more with its source material.
• The Chicago Sun-Times provided “Emancipation” with a 3.5 out of 4 stars. The review by Sam Cohen gave the film an overall positive review saying,
