Speak No Evil: Reviews of Danish vs. Dutch Family Nightmare

The Speak No Evil Series of films is a collection of ten films released in 1997 by horror writer Stephen King. The films, which are not sequels or prequels, are all about how language affects the individual’s psyche, and how words can change people. Their goal is to reveal to the audience how they feel about what they say and what they do. One such film from that series is Danish Nightmare, directed by Ted Geisel and written by King himself as he was still married to his first wife Tabitha King at the time. This movie tells of a man who learns that all of his beloved Scandinavian culture (Danish pastries) has been replaced with something horrid: American-style food like hamburgers. The man gets angry and attempts to take revenge, but he is stopped by a kindly old woman and a young American, two people who know this man’s biological father. The man is told how, instead of a horrible nightmare, he is having a dream. In the end, the man realizes that his father’s only wish was to improve life for his family and so he cannot hate him for his decision.
