The plot of the series is set 400 years in the future and follows the crew of The Orville as they explore new worlds and civilizations. This series is based on a science-fiction premise where our Earth has been destroyed and a new planet, which looks like Earth, is found in the Alpha Centauri star system.

This habitable planet can be considered an Earth twin because it has all the characteristics of our world including gravity, atmosphere, weather patterns, day and night cycle, etc. As part of a two-part episode arc centered around the character Kolton (Scott Grimes), many episodes will detail how each individual character learns more about his or her history as well as the true nature of this “Earth-like” planet which was discovered by humans.

What inspired the director to create The Orville series and what were your goals for it?

The series is inspired by the humorous, yet smart humor of Seth MacFarlane. The goal was to make a series that was funny, yet intelligent. If Seth MacFarlane made a show like this, then we felt it was important to please him as well. We knew that if he filmed it and we were to release it, the fans would eat it up and love it. The goal was to please Seth, and the fans, and create a show that is not only smart but also funny.

What are the challenges directors face while working on The Orville series?

The biggest challenge is trying to please everyone. We want to make a show that all of our viewers will enjoy and not be left out, which is tough because we have such a huge audience. The other challenge is obviously Seth MacFarlane, we all know his brand of humor and it’s quite hard to please him, but we do our best!

What are the main highlights of The Orville series?

Personally, I think the most interesting and fun part of this show is that each episode has different villains and storylines. In many shows, the stories are the same every week (usually with some character changes). With this show, there are so many different things happening in each episode that it keeps you on your toes watching. Also, our new ship will be released in 2 episodes and there will be a sneak peek at it in 1 episode. I look forward to announcing what ship we have selected for our pilot.

How do directors come up with the ideas for each episode?

There are so many different ideas to choose from and as we said before our ship will be revealed in 2 episodes. Even with the ship, we will have other things happening that are quite interesting. The directors and writers work together to come up with ideas. Sometimes a writer will have an idea and they bring it to the directors and they will work together to tweak it so that it’s perfect. Other times directors will have an idea and bring it to the writers.

The ideas can be anything from “what if we show a ship in space for 5 minutes straight” or “what if a door was stuck on a ship” or “what if our main characters were constantly underwater”. It all depends on what I want for the season, but each episode has many different things going on.
