When the death of Bryant caught up in the stadium, teams were working to move Bryant’s rafter jerseys side by side and cover with curtains the other retired jersey. The switch was made by 1 p.m. The floodlights of No. 8 and No. 24 were side by side.

The rehearsal was dominated by news of the crash. Ariana Grande had just finished a lavish set, and Billie Eilish was about to play with her brother, an acoustic version. But all eyes were on the chatterers on the other side of the floor, as workers and spectators were unbelieving.

Fans gathered to mourn throughout the city — core Between Staples and L.A. Live, created by a sea of purple orchids and yellow chrysanthemums. There was a trend among the crowds lined along the Hollywood Walk of Fame: purple and yellow and white; 24 and 8 on people’s heads. “BRYANT” was blazoning on their back.
