A Newport man has been indicted on five counts of assault of a child younger than 14.

Donald James, 52, was condemned by an Independence County jury to 150 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

A judge decided that different sentences for every one of the five charges, all Class Y crimes, should run sequentially, implying that James will serve 150 years on all charges.

The three-day preliminary was held in Independence County Circuit Court in Batesville and started on Nov. 6 and finished up the late evening on Nov. 8. The jury thought for around two hours before arriving at a decision. The defendant declined to affirm on his very own defense.

An official statement expresses that the various assaults occurred in 2014 and 2015 in Donald’s home in Oil Trough, in Independence County.

The youngster, presently 15, was nine years of age at the time the ambushes started. She is reportedly the niece of Donald James. The kid approached the abuse in 2018 when she uncovered the assaults to a teacher.
