Seven Ultimate Ways to Make Your Small Business Website Really, Really Profitable

By definition, a small Business website must be converting. A small business website must always be either 1. Bringing you more sales, or, 2. Bringing you more inquiries via lead generation.

7 useful ways to make your small business website bring in more conversions:

1. Your website must have a clear purpose and benefits for the visitor

Answer the WIFM statement quickly for them: ‘What’s In It For Me?’

Your websites’ tagline or headline must immediately and clearly convey the benefits and utility. For example, check out the landing page fro Stripe.com (payments processor). The page for Stripe Atlas page says ‘The best way to start an internet business’.

Lesson: Be clear, be concise.

2. Your website/landing pages must have a clear and urgent CTA (Call To Action) buttons

Every page on your small business website must have a strong, CTA button. It should tell the user:

What action should I take?
Examples of common call to action (CTA) buttons: Book Now, Add to Cart, Contact Us.

3. Your website must have a forceful and affecting About Us page

Did you know that the About Us is the second most visited page on a website?

Things to have on your About Us page: Team pics, quick bio of each member, 1-2 line history of the company and your mission. I say ‘mission’ because this is where you state the user benefit statement – e.g. what led you to start the business, what problem do you want to solve for them?

Include your street address and photos of the business location if possible

4. Your website must load quickly

Many small business websites are nowadays built using WordPress and they can be slow if caching hasn’t been implemented. You must also reduce image sizes and get more RAM for your hosting.

The slowest sites were WordPress based, probably due to lack of caching, the fastest was Shopify and one of the custom builds.

5. Your website design must be clean, appealing and clear

The user-centric website design, layout, and workflow help build user trust. Avoid using more than 2 colors. Focus on appropriate font and font sizes. Have helpful breadcrumb throughout the website. Have a good FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section to help the user.

6. Your website must have a responsive design

More than 50% traffic to any website now comes from mobile devices and the percentage is increasing by the day. Responsive design means your website layout is automatically formatted to different screen sizes, avoiding the use of pinching in or out to read the screen. Make sure your WordPress theme is responsive. If you have a simple HTML – based website, you can try out the Bootstrap framework, which has easy responsive components.

7. Give users a good reason to sign up for your emails/newsletters

Just putting “Sign up for our newsletter” won’t do. Why would the user agree to get yet more spam? For nothing? Give them a discount coupon, a free pdf guide, some checklist related to your industry, or some other handy things that your user will find useful and thus won’t mind sharing their email.

Time to start fixing your small business website.
