International Democracy Day

September 15 is marked as international democracy day across the globe. It is a day to create awareness among the masses about democracy. International Democracy Day was decided in 2007 by United Nations. Democracy is considered the best form of government because most people determine it. I cannot define it precisely because I have not experienced it in my own country. Pardon me for saying this.

To date, volumes have been written on this form of governance. However, all say one thing: people’s will is the jugular vein of it. It is a political system through which governments are chosen or dethroned by free and fair elections. It is a system where the opinions of the public are echoed freely. At the same time, the armed junta has continually devastated it.

MY COUNTRY, MY RULE

Every country in the world has its model of Democracy, which helps them to ensure the betterment of the people; for example, China has developed its democratic system. China’s model of democracy revolves around its people. Quality governance, equal opportunities, and accountability are its salient features. Similarly, the United States of America has presidential democracy. Great Britain has a parliamentarian democracy system which also has a monarch.

TRUE ESSENCE OF DEMOCRACY

In my opinion, the true essence of a democracy is “to respect human rights.” Mere voting is not enough but respecting the rights of the people is equally important. People should be allowed to hold any opinion or belief without punishment. Similarly, people should be allowed to speak loud of their minds and hearts. Throughout history, governments have tried to limit these rights resulting in chaos and instability.

There is a worrying trend prevailing around the world. A large population plays on nationalist feelings, targets a small group of people based on religion or race, and treats them violently. Such practices kill the essence of a democratic process and bring down the structure of the society to its bottom.

PITFALLS OF DEMOCRACY

Democratic governments are shallow and have many pitfalls. Some, very obvious, are written below.
● People are unknown of the power and importance of their vote. Due to that, the wrong people with ill intentions get selected.

● All so-called political parties run on a “might is right” formula. A group of the rogue mob is always at their disposal, which helps them to achieve their ill purposes.

● Democracy is a short-lived form of government. Significant changes demand ample time. That is why many needed projects keep hanging in the air, and delay causes substantial loss.

● Few leaders prefer their interests over the state’s interests, which excites them to misuse their power. Such an attitude gives birth to corruption, injustice, and nepotism.
