When people in foreign countries were asked about Indian films, the most probable word that came into their minds was “Bollywood”. What they don’t know, and we do, is that Bollywood is only the group of cinemas that belongs to the Hindi language. Majority of the people never heard or knew about Regional Cinema Industries like Tollywood (Telugu Cinema), Kollywood (Tamil Cinema), Mollywood (Malayalam Cinema) and so many more! Such limited stereotyping lead to only Hindi films to be nominated or recognized in reputed award ceremonies like the Oscars. This was a great injustice to films that made their way into being legendary or huge blockbusters in the history of Indian Cinema as a whole.
Thankfully, many films like Bahubali and Robot have come into light despite being regional, and reached out to foreign audiences. Eventually bringing light onto Regional Cinema. In the year 2018, the above films were recognized to be the best released according to various reviews and popularity.

10. Neerali (Mollywood – Malayalam Cinema)

This film is a survival drama film directed by Ajoy Varma, starring Mohanlal and Suraj Venjaramoodu in the lead roles. This film revolves around a Gemmologist named Sunny and a driver named Veerappan who get trapped in a truck hanging off a steep cliff in the deep jungle, and whether they tend to survive or not.

9. Ranam: Detroit Crossing (Mollywood – Malayalam Cinema)

This Criminal drama film written and directed by Nirmal Sahadev has Prithviraj Sukumaran, Rahman and Isha Talwar in the lead roles. It is about a Malayali man who works for a Tamilian ganster, and explains about how Detroit, a city situated in the US-Canada border, lost its charm a few decades ago and makes some curious comparisons to some incidents in Kerala.

8. Thaana Serndha Koottam (Kollywood – Tamil Cinema)

Directed by Vignesh Shivan, and starring Suriya Sivakumar and Keerthy Suresh in the lead roles, this film is about a young man who forms a gang to pose as CBI officers, and decide to raid the corrupt individuals of the society.

7. Kolamaavu Kokila (Kollywood – Tamil Cinema)

Starring Nayanathara in the lead role and directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, this film revolves around a young woman who takes up Illegal drug trade to make money for the treatment of her mother, who suffers from cancer.

6. Rangasthalam (Tollywood – Telugu Cinema)

Directed by Sukumar, this period action films’ plot revolves around the village Rangasthalam that faces problems with Corruption and Politics, which lead to fatal and unpredictable incidents. The lead Roles were played by Ram Charan(Chittibabu), Samantha Akkineni(Rama Lakshmi), and Aadhi Pinisetty(Kumar Babu) play the prominent roles.

5. Mahanati (Tollywood – Telugu Cinema)

Also released in Tamil as “Nadigaiyar Thilagam”, this film is a depiction of the life and events of Mahanati Savitri, a legendary actress who rose to fame and subsequently fell into debt and health issues that eventually lead to her death. Where Keerthy Suresh(Mahanati Savitri), Dulquer Salmaan(Gemini Ganesan), Vijay Devarakonda (Photographer Vijay Anthony) and Samantha Akkineni (Reporter Madhuravaani) play the lead roles.

4. C/O Kancharapalem (Tollywood – Telugu Cinema)

Directed by Maha Venkatesh and Produced by Rana Daggubati, this film is about Four love stories of four different age-groups set amidst a village in Visakhapatnam.

3. Raazi (Bollywood – Hindi Cinema)

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, this film is an adaptation of the novel “Calling Sehmat”, written by Harinder Sikka in 2008, where Alia Bhatt plays the main lead. It is a true story of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who, marries into a Pakistani family of military officials, through the orders of her father for relaying information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

2. Sanju (Bollywood – Hindi Cinema)

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, this film is entirely based on the controversial aspects of Actor Sanjay Dutt’s life, where Ranbir Kapoor plays the role of the Actor

1. Padmavat (Bollywood – Hindi Cinema)

Also released in Telugu, and Tamil, Padmavat is an epic period drama film which is based on the poem “Padmavat” by Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, this film stars Deepika Padukone (as Rani Padmavati), Ranveer Singh (As Alauddin Khiliji), and Shahid Kapoor (As Maharawal Ratan Singh) as the leads.
