Speed and Reliability:

Over the course of a year, Bluehost posted a below average 1,275ms speed (compared with the 850ms industry average).

Slow sites don’t just affect user experience. They also drag down performance, which potentially hurts your SEO and conversions ratings too.

Customer Support

Supporting two million different websites isn’t a small feat. Maybe that is why their customer Support can be considered slow.

Nevertheless, waiting times can go up to over 43 minutes, which is unacceptable if you’re potentially losing sales during that downtime.

According to several user reviews, the experience with their support also wasn’t very good. Most answers (in addition to the long delays between them), were curt and unhelpful. Bad customer support is the most common complaint about this host provider, which affect their overall grade.

BlueHost has grown thanks to a good marketing strategy based on “Expert Reviews” and good promotions. But, despite what those blogging guru’s say, there are MUCH better hosting options available (like the ones included in this article for example).

As an example, if you have done some research by now you will see a great discrepancy between the “experts” that recommend it and the low user reviews this hosting provider receives. Most complains are based on bad customer service, but as you can see in this guide, there are also hosts that provide a faster service and better customer support at the same price.

#4 – 1&1 Hosting – WordPress hosting on the Cheap

1&1 Internet, a well-recognized leader among global domain name registrars and web hosting providers, offers a complete range of feature-rich web services for every need, skill level, and budget. 1&1 Hosting is on the more affordable end of web hosting. They typically offer a very cheap 12 month introductory offer for $0.99 per month, and then increase the price after a year, which even then are on the affordable end.

Take in consideration that after your 1 year plan is over, the renewal cost is of $7.99 per mont, which balances the overall discount they made during the first year. Their pricing tiers are nearly identical to other big brand hosts like HostGator & GoDaddy when you break out the core things you are paying for (space, performance and databases). As far as pricing goes, 1&1 gets points for space & options for anyone on a super-tight budget.

Speed and Uptime

1&1 makes no claims or promises regarding uptime for most of their web hosting customers, and neither is there an SLA or guarantee to reassure prospective clients. However, all data is stored simultaneously in two locations. Should one server fail, another will take over.

1&1 still is fine for small site that are low on graphics or overhead. So on performance, like pricing and options, 1&1’s main advantage is that they excel in the basics. However, is worth mentioning that that they do provide plenty of memory to run your website.

Customer Support

1&1 has phone support, and they are quick to answer, so they do get points for that. They do well on a relative scale vs. many web hosts. Nevertheless, their main issue seems to be overall customer satisfaction and problem resolution.

Rating sites are full with complaints about their customer service (some pages more than others), however, that is expected to a degree since they are that big of a corporation (the same happens with BlueHost, Godaddy, Hostgator)

Like other big companies, they simply view customer service as a cost to be cut rather than as a marketing channel. In our experience, customer service was ok, but they clearly are following a script as other big companies that opt to put inexperienced operators on the line.

1&1 has great value plans for first-time users and plenty of more powerful products for everyone else, but unimpressive support might be an issue if you run into real difficulties.

Also, visiting their website can be a frustrating experience, as it feels somehow outdated and, in our case, crashed constantly. The interface is not user friendly, specially not what you expect from a big hosting provider.

If you are just starting using WordPress and want a provider that gives you a great introduction pricing plan while offering all the essentials, then this is a great option for you.

While GreenGeek excels at uptime and stability, they’re about at the industry average for speed. During the course of one year, they average an uptime speed of 970 ms, which is not the best, but its also not a bad result to discard this provider.

Customer Support:

Customer support response is very fast. Usually it takes less than a minute of waiting for a support agent to reply.

Their responses are helpful, quick, and concise. Overall, users seem to be satisfied. A majority of the customer responses from our background check revealed many with similarly positive experiences.

User Rating:

User Ratings in general are good, with a few exceptions that complain about their billing system and difficulty while trying to cancel the service.

A2 lacks the notoriety of some of the most popular web hosts out there. But what they lack in press mentions or advertising campaigns, they make-up for with speed and performance, as they’ve managed to deliver some of the best results of this guide.

Typically A2’s host pricing tends to be around the middle of the pack when it comes to pricing. Their “Lite” plan is priced at €3.44 ($3.92).

That’s really good, and in the market it’s really difficult to find this statistics.

A2’s page loading times are extremly fast, at an incredible average of 406ms over  the past 12 months, which is the best score in this guide. Best of all, their page speed performance has been stable and consistent too.

Customer Support

A2’s customer support is considered good, connecting quickly and providing detailed answers to our questions with a minute of each other.

They provide a phone number front and center. There is an extensive knowledgebase, live chat, and even Skype access. Social media responses are quick too.

A2 Hosting’s reps are very “hands-on” – they offer custom installs and plenty of solutions where your rep will go in and fix the issue rather than talking you through the process. While some customers may or may not like that option, it does signal that they see customer support as an investment rather than a cost.

Their regular “Hatchling” plan starts at $4.95 per month, and you can throw a domain in for only $0.01. This makes it. This makes them the most expensive of the list. But take in consideration that they are open to always be competitive in prices, and can offer discounts to match competitors prices.

they’ve so far been flawless when it comes to site stability.

In 2016, they’ve posted a 100% uptime which is perfect. For the last few month, uptime has been consistent, with an average of 99.99% which is impressive.

Customer Support

In general their customer support is average .  It’s worth noting that they do not make it easy to contact them directly. Reaching the option to chat or email customer support is a little complicated, as you will have to go thru their knowledge base first.

As with every big hosting company, waiting times can be long. In our personal experience, once we finally reached the option to chat with a representative, we had to wait for 15 minutes to chat with someone. It’s also clear that their tech support is not as knowledgeable as others included in this list.
