Jenni Rivera: Mariposa de Barrio is based on the singer's autobiographical book “Inquebrantable,” as well as testimonies from her family and close friends. The series traces her road to fame - from her early life to her tragic death.
Angélica Celaya stars as Jenni, but two other actresses will portray her at different stages in her life during the series - Samadhi Zendejas as a young adult and Regina Orquín as a child.

Mariposa de Barrio will be the second television series to air this year about the Regional Mexican superstar. From January to April, Univision broadcast its own version of the singer’s life story. The Jenni Rivera Estate filed a $10 million lawsuit against Univision for producing and airing Su Nombre Era Dolores: La Jenn Que Yo Conocí, based on an unauthorized book by the singer’s former manager Pete Salgado, which allegedly revealed confidential information protected in a non-disclosure agreement.
In addition to having the cooperation and support of the Rivera family, Mariposa del Barrio has an additional advantage over Univision’s Jenni Rivera series. Telemundo has the rights for more than 30 of Jenni Rivera’s songs, which will be included in its bio-musical series. That’s something Univision was unable to do in Su Nombre Era Dolores: La Jenn Que Yo Conocí.
Fans will hear the real Jenni Rivera’s voice with Celaya lip-syncing during the show’s performances.
The Telemundo Studios-produced series, written by Rossana Negrin, was shot in Miami, Los Angeles and Long Beach, where the singer was born. The 90-episode Jenni Rivera: Mariposa de Barrio will premiere on Tuesday, June 27 at 8 pm ET/7 pm CT.
