Using the Apple Magic Keyboard with Multiple Devices: A Clever Workaround

Wireless keyboards are usually designed to pair with multiple devices seamlessly, but the Apple Magic Keyboard falls short in this aspect. Unlike other keyboards, such as the Logitech MX Keys, which can connect to up to three devices simultaneously, the Magic Keyboard lacks this feature. However, if you’re a fan of the Apple keyboard like me and want to continue using it with different devices, I’ve discovered a simple workaround that requires no additional accessories.

Firstly, I connect my MacBook to the Magic Keyboard via Bluetooth. Then, I keep the keyboard’s wired Lightning to USB connection permanently plugged into my Windows PC. This setup allows the keyboard to automatically pair with the MacBook when the PC is switched off, as the Bluetooth connection becomes the default option. Conversely, when I boot up the Windows PC, the wired connection takes priority, directing all keyboard input to the PC.

To toggle typing back to the MacBook, I flick the power switch on the keyboard, and it reverts to wirelessly communicating with the Mac. The integrated Touch ID sensor on the keyboard also works flawlessly to unlock the MacBook as long as the wireless connection remains active.

While this solution may not be the most elegant, it has served me well for the past couple of years. Other potential options, like using a KVM switch to connect the keyboard to multiple devices simultaneously, may seem more sophisticated. However, sometimes the simplest solution is sufficient.
