In a significant decision, Bracknell Forest Council has denied planning permission for a 15-metre-high phone mast on Ringmead in Great Hollands. The mast was proposedCignal Infrastructure on behalf of mobile network operator Three. While Cignal argued that the mast would not have a detrimental impact on the appearance of the area, at least 21 nearby residents disagreed. Concerned residents claimed that the mast would be visible from their gardens and living rooms.

One resident, Paul Wright, expressed his relief at the council’s decision, stating, “That’s the biggest part of my stress life gone.” Wright, whose garden would have been directly behind the mast, believed it would have been a “total eyesore.” He expressed his gratitude that the council “has seen sense.”

Planning officers identified a potential threat to a nearby tree and cited the failure of planning consultants Dot Surveying to produce an adequate assessment proving that the tree would not be harmed. In their letter to Dot Surveying, officers stated that “the proposed mast and associated cabinets are not considered acceptable” due to the potential impact on the tree, which contributed to the character of the area.

Three, the mobile phone network, highlighted the importance of 5G rollout for the residents and businesses of Bracknell, emphasizing the need to build mast sites near where users reside. Although the plans were refused, Three is considering the council’s reasons and evaluating their next steps.
