Google Wallet Introduces Link-Based Pass Sharing for Android Users

Google Wallet for Android has unveiled its new feature of link-based pass sharing, allowing users to easily share passes for airline boarding and events. This feature is accessedopening a pass that appears below the carousel of credit and debit cards. If sharing is supported, an icon will appear to the left of the overflow menu.

Before sharing a pass, Google Wallet displays a warning message stating that the sharing cannot be undone and that the recipient can forward it to anyone. This warning message will appear every time, and there is no option to opt out of seeing it.

When the pass is shared, a long URL is generated. When the recipient taps on this URL using an Android device, it will open the Google Wallet app and automatically save the pass. This allows for the screen to auto-brighten upon opening for easy scanning.

For those using desktop or iOS devices, there is a web UI available for viewing the pass. This means that users can fully load the pass, including the QR code, on the web after adding it to their Google Account. This feature is particularly useful for households with both Android and iPhone users, as one person can distribute the pass to others.

In testing, it was found that most, but not all, airline boarding passes can be shared using this feature. The share button also appeared for event tickets.

This new link-based pass sharing feature offers a convenient way for Android users to easily share passes for various purposes. It enhances the functionality of Google Wallet and makes it more user-friendly for those who frequently use pass-based tickets for travel and events.
