Preparations Underway for World Radiocommunication Conference and the Future of Telecommunications

In less than a month, the World Radiocommunication Conference (CMR) 2023 will begin in the United Arab Emirates. This conference will address various telecommunications issues and make decisions that will shape the future of the industry. One of the key topics to be discussed is the allocation of spectrum bands for the sixth generation of mobile technology (6G). Additionally, there will be a focus on working with High Altitude IMT Base Stations (HIBS) for rural connectivity, as well as communications between satellites, smartphones, and drones.

Leading the discussions for the region will be the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL), with Mexico serving as the president and Colombia as the vice president of the preparatory group for CMR-23. Fabián Herrera, the president of Colombia’s National Spectrum Agency (ANE), shared some insights into the topics that will be addressed at the conference. These decisions will have direct implications for the telecommunications decisions that countries in the region will need to make in the future.

One of the significant areas of focus during the conference will be the 6G communication bands that will be available for auction in eight to ten years. Other topics of discussion include connectivity solutions for aircraft, ships, and autonomous vehicles. These sectors require specific technical specifications to ensure interference-free services. The implementation of intelligent transportation systems, logistics tracking, and adjustments to aeronautical and maritime operations will be part of the overall conversation.

Another important topic to be addressed is the technical definitions related to High Altitude IMT Base Stations (HIBS) for providing mobile connectivity in rural areas. This is a challenge faced not onlyColombia butother countries in Latin America. The exploration of technologies that can provide coverage in untapped areas, such as using balloons or other means, will be discussed.

The conference will also address the coexistence of geostationary (GEO) and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications. Colombia aims to ensure proper coverage in this regard. Furthermore, there will be technical discussions around satellite components for IMT networks, particularly the emerging Direct-to-Satellite (D2D) services, which are expected to generate new revenue opportunities for the satellite and mobile communications industries.

In a world where science fiction becomes a reality, there will also be discussions on improving communications for orbital vehicles, space missions, and lunar expeditions. Additionally, the conference will focus on satellite-controlled drones, aiming to expand the capabilities of unmanned aerial vehicles beyond their current limitations.

The decisions made at the CMR 2023 will shape the future of telecommunications globally, with a particular emphasis on the Latin American region. It is an opportunity for countries to work together and address the challenges and opportunities presentedemerging technologies.
