GrowSmart Maine Receives USDA Grant to Support Rural Communities

GrowSmart Maine, a nonprofit organization dedicated to community development and economic growth in Rural areas, has been awarded a $304,636 Rural Community Development Initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The funds will be used to implement a capacity-building program called Building Community Strength, which aims to provide training, technical assistance, and grants to ten rural communities across Maine.

The grant announcement was made at the annual GrowSmart Maine SummitUSDA Rural Development Maine State Director Rhiannon Hampson, along with Rebecca Casey, Chair of the GSM Board of Directors. The American Farmland Trust (AFT) will also provide a matching grant to support the project.

As the designated State Rural Development Council, GrowSmart Maine collaborates with local and state government agencies, as well as economic and community development organizations, to assist rural communities in managing change and accessing resources. The Building Community Strength program aligns with these goalshelping communities identify local assets, develop strategic plans, and access necessary funding. The program aims to build local capacity that will continue to benefit communities beyond the program’s duration.

Ten rural communities, including Calais, Danforth, Enfield, Houlton, Machias, Mexico, Presque Isle, Roque Bluffs, Skowhegan, and Winn, have already enrolled in the program. Trainees from each municipality will focus on a range of issues such as climate resilience, economic development, farm viability, affordable housing, and inclusive community development. Additionally, participants will receive training on researching and applying for state, federal, and private funding.

GrowSmart Maine will partner with organizations such as Build Maine, Eastern Maine Development Corporation, Four Directions Development Corporation, Genesis Community Loan Fund, The Musson Group, and the Sunrise County Economic Council to manage the program effectively.

The USDA’s Rural Community Development Initiative program aims to improve housing, community facilities, and economic opportunities in rural areas. This grant will support GrowSmart Maine in their efforts to empower and strengthen rural communities across the state.
