An elderly pensioner in Lowestoft has successfully stopped telecommunications workers from building a 50-foot high 5G Mast Pole outside his home through a one-man protest. Michael Garman, 69, discovered workmen with a digger arranging to dig a hole for the mast on a small grass verge outside his home and quickly parked his motor home and car on the verge, claiming ownership of the land and asserting that the workers did not have the right to erect the mast there.
Mr. Garman’s protest halted work on the site on Kirkley Park Road in Lowestoft, as he sat outside in a deckchair while neighbors brought him cups of tea. He adamantly asserted ownership of the 130ft30ft patch of grass, stating that it is specified in his deeds. The protest has temporarily put the work on hold.
In March, East Suffolk Council granted permission for Cignal Infrastructure Limited to install a 15-meter mast pole on the site to provide 3G, 4G, and 5G services to the area. The council claims to have sent a letter to all households in the immediate area, including Mr. Garman’s house, and posted a site notice on January 13.
Mr. Garman, however, insists that the council does not have the right to dictate what happens on his land. He believes that the mast would be an eyesore and negatively impact the value of his home. The ownership of the land is currently being investigatedSuffolk County Council.
