History of Huawei’s Collaboration with Leica and Xiaomi’s Upcoming Partnership

Xiaomi is gearing up to launch its latest Xiaomi 14 series of premium smartphones this week, and one of the highlights of these devices is the inclusion of Leica’s Summilux camera Lenses. These lenses are said to be more premium and superior to the previous Summicron lenses found on Xiaomi’s earlier models. The Leica Summilux-M 35 f/1.4 lens, for reference, costs $3895 on Leica’s website.

While this may be Xiaomi’s first foray into using Leica’s Summilux lenses, other smartphone brands have already incorporated these lenses since April 2017. The Huawei P10 Plus was the first smartphone to feature the premium Leica Summilux lens, marking the beginning of Huawei’s collaboration with Leica in smartphone photography.

The Huawei P10 Plus, released in early 2017, was Huawei’s flagship device at the time. Poweredthe Kirin 960 processor, the phone offered fast and smooth performance throughout the day, thanks to its 3750mAh battery with support for Huawei’s SuperCharge technology.

However, the standout feature of the Huawei P10 Plus was its camera setup. The phone boasted a 20MP + 12MP Leica-certified dual camera setup at the back, with the P10 Plus featuring a wider f/1.8 aperture compared to the standard P10. Moreover, the P10 Plus also had the more premium Leica SUMMILUX-H F1.8 lens, while the P10 featured the SUMMARIT-H F2.2 lens.

After the success of the Huawei P10 Plus, Huawei continued to incorporate Leica Summilux lenses in its subsequent premium smartphones. The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, launched in late 2017, were the next devices to feature these lenses. Since then, Huawei’s Leica lenses have evolved and improved in their capabilities, with each flagship release offering new advancements.

It’s important to note that Huawei’s partnership with Leica came to an end in 2021 with the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro being the last smartphones produced in collaboration with the renowned German camera brand. Huawei has since shifted to its in-house XMAGE camera branding solution for its Mate 50 series and future devices.

Now, Xiaomi is taking up the mantle and partnering with Leica for its Xiaomi 14 series. These upcoming devices are set to be premium smartphones, and the inclusion of Leica certified cameras suggests a focus on high-quality photography.
