Gym Town, located in Hong Kong’s Central District, offers gym-goers an immersive and unique experiencedrawing inspiration from Elon Musk’s vision of colonizing Mars. Designedlocal practice MR Studio, the fitness studio features elements that reflect a futuristic and cutting-edge atmosphere, allowing visitors to escape from their busy lives.
The entrance of Gym Town is finished in an earthy shade of orange to emulate the colors of Mars. The reception doubles as a lounge area and is adorned with a bespoke sculptural lighting piece, creating intrigue and setting the tone for the entire space.
Upon entering the gym, members are taken on a tunnel-like “portal” experience via an escalator. The walls around the escalator undulate, creating visual interest and suggesting the heat of the red planet. This visually striking feature aims to transport visitors to another world and generates a sense of anticipation and excitement as they enter the main space.
The main reception area of Gym Town is arranged as a lounge, featuring various seating areas. To address the absence of natural light, MR Studio designed a feature ceiling light that resembles a natural skylight and the crater-studded terrain of Mars.
Curves and circles are prominent throughout the gym, with wavy walls, rounded furniture, and lights inspiredsatellite dishes. The color palette shifts from dusty red-orange in the entrance tunnel to more somber greys and blacks in the changing rooms, workout areas, and studios. The workout area is designed to encourage members to fully devote themselves to their fitness routines, grounded in an organic and unpretentious style.
Gym Town has been shortlisted in the health and wellbeing interior category at this year’s Dezeen Awards. The design combines futuristic elements, immersive atmospheres, and a unique visual experience to provide gym-goers with an escape from their busy lives.
