The Hugo Awards Winners for 2023

The winners for the prestigious Hugo Awards have been announced at the 81st World Science Fiction Convention, held in Chengdu, China. The winners were recognized for their outstanding contributions in various categories, including Best Novel, Best Novella, Best Novelette, Best Short Story, Best Series, Best Related Work, and more.

Hai Ya’s remarkable novelette “The Space-Time Painter” was the winner in its category, published in Galaxy’s Edge. This award recognizes outstanding works of science fiction and fantasy fiction that fall between the short story and novella length.

Samantha Mills’ “Rabbit Test” emerged victorious in the Best Short Story category, published in Uncanny magazine. This category celebrates exceptional short stories that showcase creativity and originality.

Adrian Tchaikovsky’s “Children of Time Series” was honored with the Hugo Award for Best Series, publishedTor UK and Orbit US. This award recognizes the extraordinary achievement in storytelling across multiple books in a series.

In the Best Related Work category, Rob Wilkins’ “Terry Pratchett: A Life With Footnotes” was the winner. The book provides an insightful look into the life and work of the beloved author Terry Pratchett.

Other categories included Best Graphic Story or Comic, Best Dramatic Presentation (Long and Short Form), Best Editor (Short and Long Form), Best Professional Artist, Best Semiprozine, Best Fanzine, Best Fancast, Best Fan Writer, Best Fan Artist, and the Astounding Award for Best New Writer.

The Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book was awarded to Nnedi Okorafor’s “Akata Woman,” publishedViking. This award recognizes outstanding works of young adult fiction that captivate and inspire young readers.

Travis Baldree was recognized as the winner of the Astounding Award for Best New Writer. This award celebrates the talent and potential of emerging writers in the science fiction and fantasy genre.

The ceremony also saw Bobbi Armbruster receiving the Big Heart Award, presentedchair Ben Yalow, for their significant contributions to the science fiction and fantasy community.
