India has successfully conducted the first in a series of test flights as part of its mission to send astronauts into space2025. The test involved launching a module into space and then bringing it back to Earth to test the crew evacuation system. The module was recovered after landing in the Bay of Bengal.

The launch was initially delayed45 minutes due to weather conditions. It was then further delayedover an hour due to an issue with the engine and the ground computer putting the module’s takeoff on hold. However, the problem was rectified, and the test was successfully conducted 75 minutes later from the Sriharikota satellite launch station in southern India.

This successful test paves the way for future unmanned missions, including sending a robot into space next year. In September, India successfully launched its first space mission to study the sun, less than two weeks after a successful unmanned landing near the south pole of the Moon.

India’s successful moon landing in September 2019, following an unsuccessful attempt earlier that year, made it the fourth country to achieve this feat, following the United States, Russia, and China. This mission showcased India’s growing position as a technological and space power and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of projecting India as an emerging country asserting its place among the global elite.

Prime Minister Modi announced earlier this week that the Indian Space Agency aims to establish an Indian space station2035 and send an Indian astronaut to the moon2040. India has been launching satellites for itself and other countries since the 1960s, successfully placing a satellite in orbit around Mars in 2014. The country is also planning its first mission to the International Space Station next year in collaboration with the United States.
