Apple Music: Missing Lyrics in Personal Music Library

Many Music lovers have their own extensive music libraries, built up over years through various methods such as recording songs off the radio, creating mix tapes, ripping CDs, and downloading music from platforms like Napster. However, with Apple’s push towards their subscription-based Apple Music service, some users have noticed a lack of attention given to their personal music libraries.

One user encountered this issue when trying to play tracks through their new AppleTV setup. They noticed an icon in the bottom-right corner that indicated the presence of lyrics, but it was greyed out for all of their Personal Music Library tracks, even though they knew that text-based entries for lyrics had been made in their library before.

The user speculated that the Music.app, which is responsible for playing music on Apple devices, might be pulling the lyrics only from the Apple Music stream and not from the ID3 tags of songs in the local library. They wondered if there was a specific formatting requirement for the lyrics field in order to be recognized and displayed correctly.

While it is uncertain whether this limitation can be easily overcome, it highlights the disparity in attention given to personal libraries compared to Apple’s subscription-based service. Some users may prefer to maintain control over their own music libraries and feel disappointed when features like displaying lyrics are not available for their personal collection.
